Just Try to Enjoy this Jets Season

For the first time in a long time the New York Jets won a game that majority of the fanbase expected to win. Admittedly, it is hard to wrap my head around any game for the Jets that fits that category, but this game did and was the first game that ended up going in favor of the Jets in a long time!

For the first time since 2015 the Jets won their opening week matchup.

Geno Smith looked like the good Geno Smith. Frank Reich called a complimentary offensive game. Aaron Glenn’s superpowers calling defense showed themselves even if it was against an awful Tennessee offense. The Jets are 1-0 on the season and are tied for first place. I know it’s only one week but forecasting the rest of the season—this win and this feeling of hope won’t be around for much longer. But you can see a vision of a football team that belongs in the National Football League.

The vision isn’t blurred by preseason fog, or unfounded hype by lunatic fans, no, this win counts and you can picture waking up this time next week and the Jets being an undefeated team. A lot will have to go right for the Jets against a Packers team that has expectations, but Green Bay just blew a game in which they led 25-17 following kicking a 40-yard Trey Smack field goal—although there was a five-yard penalty by Minnesota’s Dallas Turner that would not give Green Bay a first down but make it 4th and 1 from the Minnesota 17 yard line. Matt LaFleur, the Packers Head Coach, decided to take the points off the board and try to bury his division rival at the start of the 4th quarter. Instead, it went the other way for the cheese heads. Packers quarterback, Jordan Love, got stuffed on a quarterback sneak attempt turning the ball over and the Vikings went on a 22-0 run to end the game and win 39-22.

The Green Bay Packers that are walking into MetLife Stadium next Sunday aren’t the same team that walked into MetLife last year to face the Giants, this is a very gettable team. If the Jets play the same way they did against Tennessee, they’ll be in another winnable game. That’s all you can ask for in week two.

This Jets team isn’t going anywhere this year. If they get over their Vegas win total it would be the first seven-win season since 2023. If they somehow win eight games, it would their first time doing that in 11 years; which is also the last time the Jets had a winning record (10-6). All your asking for as a fan this season is for this team to give you a chance. How that equates to Aaron Glenn’s job security is a question for January. Not for right now. How the Jets bridge the gap from Geno Smith to their next hopeful franchise quarterback isn’t a September problem. Let Darren Mougey answer those questions when the new league starts in March of 2027.

Try to enjoy this season. I’m trying to convince myself to do so writing this. But what we all need to do is separate what’s “right” for the future of this team and what’s good for the team in this moment. Try and go 2-0. Shock the world. Show for even a brief moment that in one season the New York Jets can go from laughingstock of the league to an undefeated team and maybe even have sole possession of first place in the AFC East as we get to the third week of September. Even if it only ends up being that way for two weeks.

Winning this game against ‘ole friend Robert Saleh and the Titans allows you to dream big…ish. These aspirations and dreams aren’t going to end with you bouncing grandkids on your knee in 35 years talking about how Geno Smith navigated a collapsing pocket. But they will allow you to enter a time machine of sorts and transport you back to 2022—the last time this team was missing what we thought was just a quarterback. Maybe, just maybe this next time will be the time it finally goes right. And the 2026-27 Jets will be remembered for that.
