The Broken Bird

The bird has a broken wing… Greg Bird is out for the season with a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder. This is a big loss for the Bronx Bombers because Bird gives them some need depth on the bench not to mention some pop from the left side when needed, while also providing Joe Girardi some needed flexibility in making lineups. Bird made his Major League debut on August 12th in Cleveland going 0-5. Then after that rough night in Ohio Bird would record a .261 average with eleven big home runs and thirty one RBI’s in just forty six games.
Bird highlights a good young crop of young players that are coming to the Bronx in the next 3 seasons. Bird when he first came up to the majors was brought up simply because he could hit at every level, and boy was that correct. Personally I really was looking forward to seeing what Bird would do in 2016, and how he would develop his game for his rookie season. The Yankees from a health stand point need to find a first baseman who can stay healthy and on the field while also being productive. It would be extremely disappointing if Bird turns out to be a younger version of Mark Teixeira.
While injuries are a part of the game it also gives another player an opportunity to show that he can play consistently and do it often. The players that bombers can look too Dustin Ackley, Tyler Austin a young former top prospect played eight games in the Arizona Fall League this past November, and Austin looks like the starting Triple A starting first baseman, he could possibly get a Spring Training invite. Brian Cashman can also look at players like Pedro Alvarez who can not only fill the power slot and first base back up whole, but he can also play a little bit of third as well if the yanks need him to.
