For a day the Yankees showed they might be on to something

For a day, the “run it back” Yankees looked like they quieted their critics for a night.

The Bomber offense got to two-time All-Star and San Francisco Giants ace Logan Webb in the second inning—gashing San Fran for five runs on five hits. The Yankees ended up winning by a score of 7-0 and the biggest takeaway from game one of 162 is the Yankees won a game convincingly without hitting a single home run in the game. How long will that last? Who knows, but baseball’s number one run scoring offense a season ago opened 2026 with quite a glowing first impression. And Aaron Judge had as bad a night at the plate as you could have on Opening Day. The Yankee captain went 0-5 with four strike outs and didn’t look like he had his timing all the way there just yet. Not to worry it’s still March, the two-time reigning American League MVP will be fine. No need to boo number 99 for one bad game.

The brand of baseball the Bombers showcased on Opening Day by the Bay is a brand that the biggest critics of this organization have been clamoring for since Aaron Boone took over as manager in 2018. These Yankees had timely hitting, forced the issues on the basepaths, and worked counts to their advantage. Is it 1999 all over again? Someone pinch me.

Speaking of 1999, Max Fried pitched into the 7th inning and found his way out of trouble early on only to breeze through a pretty impressive Giants lineup. The Yankees impromptu ace at the start of 2026 got out of a first inning jam with runners on first and third and the heart of the San Francisco’s order due up. After a turbulent first inning, Fried allowed just two more baserunners for the first of his outing. That’s exactly why the Yankees inked the former World Champion ace with the Atlanta Braves on the dotted line last December. The first impression of the Yankees bullpen needs to be incomplete right now because the arms used were the preserved lower leverage guys.

Jake Bird as the first reliever out of the bullpen in 2026 retired both batters he faced and only threw seven pitches. Brent Headrick who was claimed before last season from Minnesota, impressed in 2025 in a limited role filling in as an injury replacement and on Wednesday threw 15 pitches over the course of an inning. Headrick is still the secondary lefty out of the pen with Tim Hill being in the small circle of trust of Aaron Boone. The only high leverage arm used was Camilo Doval who pitched the bottom of the 9th against his former team.

It's only one game but the way the game was one is a formula that is as tested as time over the course of a Major League season. It is a style that the Yankees haven’t shown much of in their blind analytical model they’ve fallen in love with. Home runs will come and still be the main way the Yankees put runs on the board, but showing that they are capable of winning other ways—ways that analytics might not prioritize as much is good for a fanbase that is as angry as ever based on the offseason that the Bomber front office decided to have.
