Cross Roads in Metlife
The past few NFL Drafts both the Jets and Giants have tried
to rebuild their franchises and usher in a new era. An era that hopefully will
be filled with winning football. On Thursday night the two New York rebuilds
continue, and if it wasn’t clear by now, the two teams that share Metlife
Stadium are going in opposite directions.
Gang Green was up first (per usual) and selected Defensive
End Quinnen Williams from Alabama. With new Defensive Coordinator Gregg
Williams and his 3-4 defense, the Jets the run stuffer and hopeful pass
disrupter in the middle to put the polish on an offseason that saw them key
pieces to sure up one of the worst defenses in the league in 2018-19 (25th
in total defense).
For the New York Football Giants, I have some good news… you
have your quarterback of the future! There is only one problem, he might be the
best quarterback in the draft. That honor could very well be given to the first
overall pick Kyler Murray, but the conscience pick from the “experts” that know
football better than anyone give that honor, at least right now, to Dwayne
Haskins. Haskins will for sure make the Giants for passing on him given that he
now plays in Washington and will see Big Blue twice a year. Daniel Jones wakes
up this morning in one of the toughest positions any athlete faces—being a made
man in the eyes of the New York media frenzy. Jones while at Duke threw for
2,674 yards, with a 60% completion percentage, 22 touchdowns, and only nine
interceptions. Jones added 319 yards with three touchdowns on the ground. Dave
Gettleman the Giants GM said he was in “full-bloom love” with Daniel Jones.
The silver lining could be that the Giants finally feel is
the future of the franchise and pulled the trigger on him. Really Giant fans
are faced with two realities. Either Daniel Jones is Kristaps Porzingis and
will make Big Blue Nation ecstatic and ride Jones all the way to the promise
land. Or Jones will be the next Christian Hackenberg. Presumably Daniel Jones
will see the field for the Giants, unlike Hackenberg, but the early reaction to
this pick has the stench of Christian Hackenberg all over it.
Getting back to the Jets, personally I would have went
offensive line and sure up the backfield that has two major investments in it.
Sam Darnold is too valuable by himself to risk any time off the field. The Jets
have had one of the worst offensive lines since two Jet legends (Nick Mangold
& D'Brickashaw Ferguson) retired. It could be worse than Quinnen Williams,
but with no second round pick, Williams has
to be the real deal to pass up much needed O-Line help.
As the madness of the NFL Draft continues, both the Jets and
Giants are in good positions to have one of the best drafts either franchise
has seen in some time. This has been said a lot in the past few years but this
is truly the turning point for the Jets and Giants. The Jets will either fail
again as they go all in trying to rebuild for the millionth time. And for the
Giants this could be exactly what you needed to jump start the rebuild and make
the post Eli-era a short lived vacation from title town. Or it could go the way
of the Jets rebuilds with Smith, Hackenberg, and Petty, and be napalm to the
front office and fan base. But, only time will tell, however the einds of time seem to be changing in New York…
