Good things come to those who wait
Every music fan understands the uncontrollable anticipation
one has when they are waiting for their favorite artist to release a new album.
Sports fans are now in that phase with their favorite sports league. Much like
almost everything during the COVID-19 Pandemic for us fans its uncharted
territory and the anticipation feels like crippling anxiety. However, fans
should realize how special a time we are living in, in relation to the return
of sports in our lives.
The excitement that will return with sports coming back into
our lives will be like nothing any fan has lived through. The interest in going
and see sports in person will go up astronomically with the money that has been
lost collectively will flood back into the pockets of the greedy owners. The
coverage of sports and the consumption of every snippet of sports will have ratings
on par with the Jordan documentary.
Owners and players as well will return to the days of seeing
millions of dollars enter their respective bank accounts. However, I get the
reason why everyone in sports is complaining and wanting to play, nobody likes to lose money (no matter
how much it is), and rich people especially hate seeing any negative figure financially.
As fans we should discard any comments made in the near future when it comes to
money because everyone involved in getting sports back on television only care
about the cash that comes along with games.
Sports returning will be the best season premiere of
television history even beating out some Friends, Office, or I Love Lucy season
starters. The buffoons up in Buffalo who jump through flaming tables (not
judging it’s awesomely idiotic) will have nothing on the collective sports
world losing their minds over the first live sports broadcast of the 2020
season. It will be epic, but give it time. The grim reality of sports being
delayed until 2021 does seem more like the future and to be honest I am
perfectly okay with that.
Which would you rather have?
A. All
major sports leagues release joint statement pushing play back until 2021.
B. Each
individual league “leak” proposals of start dates and leading us on with momentous
false hope until 2021 arrives.
I would rather have Scenario
A so I know that there is a concreate (or as solid a date of can be during
these times) to when sports will be back. That also gives the leagues a time
table to make sure that any Pandemic proposal (if needed) will be completely
thought out and the testing procedures will be hopefully further along than
they are right now and can be done in a space where the leagues aren’t taking
tests away from the American people. Starting in 2021 solves essentially every
question that has been brought up during the quarantine with the exception
being “what about a second wave” and even that question is more solvable
because we will have more of a grasp on that question months down the line. Time
is a friend of reopening. Start the clock on “Sports in 2021” now. Even if the
country slowly begins to open up over the course of the summer months, the
enticing thought of playing in 2020 is a dangerous thought process, because of
the possible impact of a second wave. Let’s not rush everything back once health officials give the American public the “okay”
to start to open back up. Put sports on the back burner right now, there are
bigger things to tackle at the moment. It’s okay, the excitement once the
return happens will outlast the sadness us sports fans are feeling in the
moment. Sports will get its day again, but for now, the candy shop is closed.
