Aaron Boone is back, now Cashman is in the hot seat

Aaron Boone is back for three more years… For now. With the new CBA looming the actual dollar amount has not been announced, but the man who is currently 9th in wins in franchise history, the proverbial Yankee punching bag is back!

Whether you agree with the decision or not, Boone all things considered is the right man for the job right now. Brian Cashman said if Boone wasn’t the manager in 2022 “we’d want someone like him” and “if he was a free agent he’d be the number one managerial candidate.” Cashman confirmed what I thought and a lot of people around baseball have thought: if not Aaron Boone than who? Cashman’s first words today were about Boone’s ability to connect, communicate, and have an open mind. All things every manager has to have in the game right now. Boone isn’t the first manager or the last to be criticized for his use of analytics. But to truly understand this hire take a look around the rest of baseball. Kevin Cash has been openly questioned in Tampa by the media for some of his decisions managing a game. Dave Roberts until last October was sitting in the same seat Aaron Boone is sitting in right now. The Dodger fans and writers didn’t think he was the man for the job. Roberts routinely out-managed himself, (even though he got to a World Series), he couldn’t seem to rally his team to close the deal, until 2021. What this means is it’s on the players. The Yankees have a process that gets them to the postseason, the players haven’t been able to help their manager or front office get over the hump. Cashman talked about the offense having flashing red lights of concern throughout the season and going backwards “in areas we didn’t expect.”

All that collimating to what seems like it will be another winter of spending. Cashman didn’t outright say those words, he said he doesn’t know the amount of money he will be allowed to have out of Hal Steinbrenner’s pockets. Cashman did say the Gleyber Torres will be a second baseman, the bombers need a more flexible roster, and shortstop is a need. In the past whenever the Yankees have a need they pay handsomely for it. From recent memory see, A-Rod, C.C. Sabathia/AJ Burnett/Mark Teixeira, and Geritt Cole. Cashman also said “we’re not as athletic or contact oriented as we’d like to be” which raises an eye at who they are looking at to start at short next season. Carlos Correa is the best fielding shortstop on the open market with a 2.9 dWAR according to Baseball Reference and 21 DRS according to Fangraphs. His 131 OPS+ and 134 WRC+ make him the most attractive candidate going by the words of Brian Cashman.

For a season that was regarding by Cashman himself as “the toughest of my career” it is now time for him and his front office to stop talking the talk and go out and deliver a championship season.
