EXTRA EXTRA: Gang Green is exciting in their first win

Watching the Jets yesterday, IT WAS FUN! Zach Wilson was entertaining, and he played well! The defense was flying around and making plays. The Jets won a football game. If yesterday was an indication of what is to come from Robert Saleh, Zach Wilson, and the rest of gang green I cannot wait to turn on the J-E-T-S every given Sunday.

Zach Wilson showed the talent that made him the second overall pick and showed how Mike LaFleur can draw up plays to win games. Wilson wasn’t perfect, he even missed easy throws to put the game on ice in the 4th quarter and overtime. If Wilson hits Corey Davis on a five yard out route with a little more than two minutes on the clock, Tennessee doesn’t touch the ball again, and the game doesn’t go to overtime, he still has a ton of room to grow to become consistent winning quarterback in this league.

On the defensive side of the ball, I am floored by the performance through the first month of the season (and today in particular) of Quincy Williams. The third-year linebacker is playing with his hair on fire. Another Williams, Quinnen Williams played his best game in Gotham. The Jets had seven sacks of Ryan Tannehill, held Derek Henry under five yards per carry (he still ran for 157 yards and a touchdown), and for a fourth straight week held an NFL under 30 points. Another guy that has played fantastic on Sunday and for the entire season thus far is John Franklin-Myers. Robert Saleh has changed the culture on the defensive side of the ball—he has taken what has made him successful in San Francisco and has made an immediate impact all the way across the country.

Big plays are exciting, and Zach Wilson delivered on that, but he needs to make the easy throws. Wilson has shown hints of his talent up to yesterday’s game with yesterday being the first day that he put meaningful plays on tape in a professional game. Those plays will not happen every week and Zach Wilson is not the second coming of Patrick Mahomes, but he can look like Mahomes for a play or two a few times a year. If Wilson can make the easy throws, the Jets will win a lot of games in the future because of how Robert Saleh has laid the framework for a defense that will be as imposing as Rex Ryan’s defense that played in back-to-back AFC Championships.

What is most apparent is that the Jets in the next three drafts need to bolster their Offensive Line to protect the golden goose that is Zach Wilson. The other priority is getting cornerbacks so the defense isn’t just reliant on the front seven to dominate a game. Like week one, there are a lot of good things that happened that can translate to success later down the road in this rebuild.

A win is a win, no matter which way you get one, now is a time to celebrate the first win in the Robert Saleh era, but it’s also time to keep improving when you have one of the worst teams in the league in Atlanta next week across the pound. My advice for the Jets on that game, get to London early in the week, teams who do that, usually win the game because the time difference doesn’t bother them nearly as much.

Extremely excited for the future; let’s go J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!
