Insane Opening Sunday of football plus Game Day

Absolutely crazy opening week for the NFL yesterday. Where to start there are so many story lines from yesterday it might have been hard to follow last night. Defense was an important topic yesterday. If you are teams like San Diego, or Denver defense saved the game for you. If your waking up as a Giant you might be to happy with your defense.

Speaking of the Giants that has to be the hot topic this morning from everything that happened yesterday. I have to ask, does what the Giants did last--night passing the ball, in a way remind anyone of what Seattle did in the Super Bowl just seven months ago? If you fell asleep during the game, the Giants got the ball with 5:08 to play in the game and drained the clock until the 2 minute warning where they were on Dallas' 20. On 3rd and 14 Eli throws a dime to Odell Beckham Jr, putting the ball on the 4 yard line. Game over right? Wrong, this is only when it starts to get good. The Giants give the ball to Reshad Jennings twice and waste the Cowboys last 2 time outs. THEN, they decide to pull a Seattle and pass the ball on 3rd and goal from the 1. Eli didn't throw a pick, but he didn't take a sack and waste an extra 40 seconds but throw the ball out of the back of the endzone. Then Dallas instead of choking like Romo does often, he slices threw the Giants like a butter knife. He completes the 1:27 minute drive with a strike to Dallas Legend Jason Witten. So the frequently asked question this morning is why didn't the Giants run the ball or why didn't Eli take the sack?

The Lions can ask similar questions as they they were leading 21-3 at one point. Then Detroit's' defense who desperately missed the presence of Suh yesterday in the San Diego. The defense looked gassed and unmotivated as they let Philip Rivers and the Chargers offense score 30 unanswered points. Rivers just did whatever he wanted with the Lions lack luster defense. The pressure on Rivers was nonexistent and that allowed the secondary to be picked apart. The Lions can put some blame on the offense not throwing Calvin Johnson's way. Johnson who is they best receiver in the league had just 2 catches for 39 yards. To me that just seems a little odd, seeming that Calvin is Matthew Stafford's favorite target and rightfully so. But they need to get Johnson the ball. Ameer Abdulah the rookie from Nebraska showed out yesterday with a combined 94 yards and a score. Golden Tate also had a decent day grabbing 4 balls for 24 yards. The offense who got out to a sprinting start scoring twice on their first two possessions. Then the offense hit a wall, were they would usually go to Johnson they ran the ball. Head scratching to an extent.

In Denver it was a very odd game. The prolific high powered offense of Denver didn't get into the endzone of Sunday. Instead the defense scored on a pick six thanks to Hakeem Talib who hawked the ball throughout the day, finally got his early in the 3rd.The defense also stood strong on the last drive of the game. Darian Stewart picked off Joe Flacco with 36 seconds to go clinching the win for the Broncos. With the loss Baltimore shouldn't feel that bad as they held Peyton to 175 yards and a important pick six by Jimmy Smith. If you are Denver you need to fix the offensive struggles quick as the Broncos have a Thursday night show down with the Chiefs at Arrowhead.

Now, finally on to the game ball. You could make a great chase for Tony Romo or Aaron Rodgers, and even Darian Stewert. And yes Super Mariota did play extremly well in his first game but then again it is the Tampa Bay Bucs. The Rams as a whole team are my runners up because I thought it would be way to easy to pick the whole team, but by God did they have a great game against Seattle, giving up the lead and coming back in OT. However, with that all said, my game ball is Tyler Eifert the Cincinnati Bengals tight end. Eifert tore apart the Oakland secondary for 104 yards and 2 scores. He also had some nice blocks on the outside securing running lanes for Jeremy Hill.
