What’s the Nets Move Sir?
Going 21-41 this season, buying out Joe Johnsons’ contract, and firing Lionel Hollins after three seasons as the head man—Brooklyn has officially begun their rebuild. Kind of unfortunate timing for the Nets considering the state of basketball in the Big Apple. With the Knicks just eleven games ahead of the Nets, basketball is in a state of turmoil. Not to mention that with the lack of picks the Nets will be trying to rebuild for a long time.
There are not too many people to blame for the way the franchise has turned out. Under Billy King the Nets were a win now team especially with the move from New Jersey to Brooklyn. Trading for Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Jason Terry sounded like a decent deal for the time aside for how many draft picks King decided to give away to Boston. And now with none of the players that were traded for on roster, you could say Billy King sabotaged the Nets before he was kicked out of Brooklyn.
Now personally the Nets did not have to go into full rebuild mode so quickly. If you remember the Nets were in a hard fought battle with the Atlanta Hawks just two years ago. With role players like Alan Anderson, Mason Plumlee, and Andray Blatche chipping in their best games and the “Big 3” of Darrion Williams, Joe Johnson, and Brook Lopez playing in sync. This Nets team seemed like they were just a shooter and a back-up big to making a serious Finals run. Williams in Game Four went off for thirty-five and looked like the Utah Jazz Williams that Brooklyn traded for in 2012. With Alan Anderson looking like a legit sixth man the Nets had something to build on, but King thought over wise.
But why gaze over the past when the future is right in front of us. Rondae-Hollis Jefferson and Chris McCullough seem like borderline All-Stars in the front court with Jarod Jack and Bojan Bogdanovic in the back court. Brook Lopez is the only All-Star on roster and possibly the only person of value. If the Nets trade Lopez, they need to get at least one first round pick and if possible a player that preform right now. With the lack of picks the Nets don’t have many options to be relevant in weak Eastern Conference. The Nets also don’t have the roster currently to court a big name free-agent like Kevin Durant. So, what the Brooklyn Nets need to do is continue the forward movement with the current front office headed by Sean Marks and Kenny Atkinson on the sidelines. The talent will work itself out and money will be coming after next season when the NBA increases the cap number. Hang in there Nets fans the reinforcements are just a couple of cellar dueler years away, let’s hope that Eastern Conference isn’t star studded with players like Steph Curry and Kevin Durant.
