Day 204
Fresh Start_204: An under the table signing
First off, I would like
to apologize for my lack luster of articles and podcast over the past two
weeks. It won’t happen for that much longer if at all for the upcoming weeks. My
schedule for articles will be coming out later today.
Getting, into today’s
Fresh Start, I would like to discuss the Seattle Seahawks attempt at getting another
bruising running back. The Seahawks have signed former Green Bay Packer back
Eddie Lacy. Lacy hasn’t been the same player since his sophomore season where
he rushed for 1,139 yards and 9 touchdowns. After 2014, Lacy has suffered two separate
injuries that has derailed his career.
Having two different
concussions in 2013 and 2014 (however he only missed minimal time), he has had
a groin and ankle injuries that cost him a total of 11 games. Seattle, like
Green Bay had a difficult time finding a number one running back in 2016-17. The
Seahawks had two different backs that both got injured in Thomas Rawles and
C.J. Prosise. These two backs have shown in 2016 that they can’t handle the
work load of Rawles and Prosise; while getting Lacy seems like a security
blanket for $5.55 Million ($3 Million guaranteed).
Rawles is most likely the
number one back in Seattle, but having Lacy with something to prove (to himself
by dropping weight, and Seattle with proformance) on a second contract and
could be the bruising power back that Seattle could put in during short yardage
situations. Lacy will be the goal-line back, first two down back, and that’s
it. Lacy hasn’t had a 500-yard receiving season in his career, which is
worrisome as an overall back to win the starting job with the Seahawks. If he
gets his hands and routes to that point, you could see the old Eddie Lacy that
was running down people’s throats in 2014.
Personally, I like the
signing for a small risk from Seattle’s perspective to get Lacy on a second
contract that is only a single season. This is Lacy’s second chance and only
chance in the NF. If Lacy wants to continue to play football he will show out
and prove all his haters wrong. Pete Carroll is the perfect coach for Lacy to
do this, and I am routing for him. This has a Legarrette Blount type of
situation with New England, and the Seahawks would love this signing if Lacy is
60% of what Blount was for New England. Seattle didn’t hit a homerun with this
signing, but it could be a signing that you look back and see that was not only
a career changer, but possibly a signing that helped Seattle make a good
playoff run.
