The Farewell Trail…
The Farewell Trail…
With the Game Six
clinching home victory, Kevin Durant and the Thunder are headed to the Western
Conference Finals against this year’s MVP in Stephen Curry and the Golden State
Warriors. This is not the Conference Finals that most of us thought we were
going to see at the end of the regular season. The San Antonio Spurs had an
incredible season with only fifth teen loses this season and looked as the main
contender to knock of the Warriors. This Thunder team was on the totally flip side.
Oklahoma City struggled their way into the playoffs going five and five in the
last ten before the end of the season. The Thunder also was notorious for
blowing fourth quarter leads over the course of the season, most notably
against the Los Angeles Clippers. Durant and Westbrook looked they had some
chemistry problems over the course of the year and especially heading into the
playoffs.
With that said, it was
Westbrook who did something that we haven’t seen him do in his whole career and
that is taking a backseat and letting Kevin Durant take over the game. In all
fairness Durant is almost seven feet tall and can knock down twenty-five
footers with ease. Durant put his footprint on the series when he went off for
a playoff career high with forty-one points in Game Four series deciding game.
In Game Four in specific the fourth quarter the Thunder found the secret
formula that they have been so desperately been looking to beat San Antonio. In
the first two games Westbrook played right into the hands of the Spurs shooting
contested threes and shooting Oklahoma City out of the game and letting the
Spurs dictate the pace of the game and letting Kawhi and LaMarcus Aldridge have
their way with the Thunder defense.
However, in Game Four
Westbrook finally for the first time in his pro career took a backseat and let
his super-star counterpart dominate the game. You see many “experts” believe
that Durant and Westbrook are better off on different teams, and that is a very
interesting concept to consider especially that Durant’s contract is up after
this season. Quite honestly I see Durant leaving Oklahoma City if they don’t
win a championship this season and the odds are heavily stacked against them
with Golden State and Cleveland (presumably) waiting for them in the Finals. We
will see if the last two drafted Seattle Supersonics will stay together in
Oklahoma City or not. Durant is possibly the highest sought after free agent of
the summer and for good reason. Does he go back home? Does he join the team
that he just dominated in San Antonio? Does he go back to Oklahoma City, or
somewhere else entirely?
