Honest Review #2.1
Honest Review #2.1: And so it begins
Well, Happy New Year to
all football fans around the country and around the world. Like any start in
any of the four major sports in the U.S. the Opening Day of the sport is always
filled with optimism because any year can be your team’s year.
Unfortunately, for the
Jets; like many before it—this is not our year. With a lack luster performance
(to be nice about it) the Jets fall to 0-1 on the young season. This team as
expected has a ton of holes and no clear solution on patching those holes to at
least look competitive in 2017.
From not using Bilal
Powell pretty much at all in the first half, to only rushing for 36 yards, turning
the ball over twice, and going 4/14 on third down. Let’s not forget that Josh
McCown went 26/39 for 187 yards and two interceptions.
Since the end of the game
I have tried to understand why Bilal Powell only got 7 carries for the entire
game, and for the life of me I cannot figure it out. Powell was the most effective Jet with the ball
in his hands, and I guess it will just be a matter of time until Todd Bowels
figures that out. This offense will revolve around Powell before the end of the
year and that is because the Jets find themselves in the same hole that they
were at the beginning of training camp. With Jermaine Kearse the only decent
receiver that the Jets have he will be double covered most of the time he is on
the field. That is because Quincy Enunwa got hurt in the Preseason. If, Enunwa
didn’t get hurt maybe the Jets could be a 4-6 win team this year, but with only
Kearse in that receiving core, the Jets will need Powell to be the oil that
fuels this machine.
As for the horrific 3rd
down conversion rate, that will just come with time and better play calling.
Practicing with mostly rookies and a shaky offensive line, it’s a prayer that
the 3rd down conversion rate improves over the course of the year
(and that still might not be enough to win the ball game). McCown is exactly
what you thought he was going to be and with his injury history, he might not
finish the season under center.
If that doesn’t scream
the worse team in the NFL I don’t know what does.
The Bills had something
like 13 plays over 20 yards this afternoon with LeSean McCoy rushed for 110
yards. The defense was the literal definition of “Swiss cheese” with the amount
of missed assignments and blown coverages that happened in Buffalo for the
Jets.
I can only imagine what
Derek Carr will do to this Jets defense next week in Oakland. And, what the
Jets offense will look like against that stout Oakland defense. Being that the
Jets could only manage 206 total yards from scrimmage—we will see what
abomination will show up next week. Let’s just hope for the best and hopefully
it won’t be a 50 point shutout win for the Raiders. Anyway, it’s been a LONG
while since I’ve said this but LET’S GO JETS and let’s keep pushing toward that
franchise quarterback.
