Honest Review #2.13: You have to show up everyday
It’s not often that I just
turn a Jet game off in pure disgust, I’ve done it before but this is the first
of 2017. It has nothing to do with what happened the week before against Kansas
City. That is irrelevant as soon as the clock strikes midnight on Sunday night.
Once Monday rules around the Sunday before doesn’t matter.
After a 38-point
performance against Kansas City the Jets get shutout by the struggling Denver
Broncos. The game against Kansas City doesn’t matter at this point because it’s
irrelevant—it’s in the past. This Jet performance just shows all the Jet fans
that watched this game that the team didn’t get off the plane. The Jets just
they’d come into Denver, walk in, and walk out with a win. That’s the ONLY way
you can justify a performance like this. Because this team has talent, this
team has beaten playoff teams and has been in games against playoff teams. They
just played down to their competition.
I said last week that the
win against Kansas City was a culture building win. Well, you can also
establish that same culture after an embarrassing loss like this. If any other
Jet team from this past year walked into the building against the Broncos; Denver
would have lost no question about it. The Jets thought they were too good to be
put on the same field as the Broncos and got a good old-fashioned butt kicking.
That’s really the story.
Yes, Josh McCown did
suffer a broken hand late in the 3rd quarter. McCown shouldn’t have
been in the game because of the back injury that he previously suffered in the
2nd quarter. McCown just wasn’t the same after that. The game was
still in the balance when McCown stepped out for three plays. Those three plays
went to Bryce Petty who looked good when he stepped in only to have McCown
throw an interception the very next play that he came in for. Petty looked
comfortable and had the Bronco defense on their heels. If the Jets just took
the time and let Petty play out the half maybe this game would’ve been
different. Petty would come back in and finish the game and the box score doesn’t
tell the whole story. 2/9 isn’t good but a few of those incompletions were just
dropped by Jet receivers.
With McCown’s broken
hand, maybe Bryce Petty will get some reps. With Petty and Hackenberg both on
roster; one of these two quarterbacks has to stay on roster after the season. Like
Geno Smith not being in the long-term plans of the New York Giants, Josh McCown
isn’t a part of the long-term plans for the Jets. Let McCown rest up his hand,
he has another contract in the NFL coming next year, it’s just not with the
Jets. Josh McCown has done enough for a contract next year. I am not
discounting what Josh McCown has done for the Jets this season. At the
beginning of the year this was a team that was look at as a only win team tops.
He has turned this team into a team that fought for a playoff spot but just
wasn’t able to pull it off in the end. He will get another contract in the
league because he is a pros pro. But, I’ve seen this swan song before. The
2015-16 with Ryan Fitzpatrick as he lead the Jets to a 10-6 season (just barely
missing out on the playoffs) and held the Jets organization hostage throughout
the offseason looking for that next contract only to return to the form that
landed on his then 7th team in the league. There is a reason why
guys like McCown and Fitzpatrick last so long in the NFL. They are great locker
room guys and they are a good enough backup to carry a team for some time. Josh
McCown has carried the Jets for long enough in 2017.
What Todd Bowles should
do is let Bryce Petty play for his job. If you have watched Bryce Petty
throughout his short career you can see that Petty has the arm talent that you
cannot teach. He just needs to play against live action to fine tune reads and
get more knowledge in his head. Petty can go against the Jets defense and watch
tape until his head pops off his shoulders, let him play. He will be a
fantastic option for the Jets moving forward. With what has been going on in
the league with all the injuries to quarterbacks you need two good ones. Bryce
Petty has the stuff you can’t teach—he needs to be taught in a baptism by fire
situation. The Jets will let a great talent walk through their franchise
without a blink of an eye if they don’t give him a chance.
The playoffs were a long
shot to begin with so now that those dreams have come crashing down to reality,
it’s time to continue to build for the future. Full steam ahead with Bryce
Petty. On to New Orleans (dear god) but the message stays the same LET’S GO
J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!
