Day 2

Fresh Start_2: Pink Slip
It’s just about that time of year where the NFL rosters thin out, and your favorite team gets their rosters closer to an opening day look. For the New York Jets, Geno Smith looks like he will be moving further down the bench; or possibly on the way out the door. With Bryce Petty looking like a solid backup to Ryan Fitzpatrick. Petty went 7/14 for 93 yards in limited time. While this last Friday Petty went 16/26 for 242 and two scores with no interceptions. After watching a small sample live, and tap afterwards Petty looks comfortable in the pocket and in this offseason to be a reassuring backup if there was anything to happen to Fitz. After the rumors of the Jets “grooming” Petty to actual show up on the grind iron. I understand that it is the preseason, but it’s now or never for guys like Petty and Geno to prove that they should be on the roster.
Geno went 8/14 for 79 yards and a touchdown, while going downhill in week 2 going 6/13 for 47 yards and an interception. So now, without a doubt there is a quarterback competition (once again) but this time it’s for the backup role thank god. Whether Todd “Super” Bowels says it or not there is an important competition on the team. Honestly, as you can tell the Jets fans are split on the play of Geno Smith. Some want him to do well and keep giving him chances; and the other majority want his name of the cut list. I am in the second majority because I have been up and down the Geno Smith rollercoaster.
Up and down the twists and turns, Geno has become a Mark Sanchez type of guy in New York in the terms of giving him a fresh start. I think it’s in both parties’ best interests to part ways. Smith will have a place on an NFL roster somewhere due to the lack of Superstar Quarterback play in today’s league. Where that will be, I don’t know but I am optimistic for him. However, in New York enough is enough for Geno, change needs to be made for the Quarterback core. Especially with the drafting of Christen Hackenburg; who I have shown my displeasure with on this blog. Week 3 for me will be the defining factor to see who gets the backup role for the Jets this season. Something you can also throw in is the fact that Geno does not want to lose the backup role, which based on play could become an unnecessary distraction for the team, which could lead to his release.
