Day 8
Fresh Start_8: The
Golden Boy and the Rook
With Romo’s most recent
injury, the broken bone in his back keeping him on the shelf for next 6-10
weeks, the star quarterback just might be done in Dallas. With the past two
seasons in Dallas ending short because of an injury to Romo, the Cowboys
selected Dak Prescott in the fourth round this past April. Prescott when
drafted was to be the security blanket behind the franchise quarterback so the
team didn’t fall behind in a very tight division race. Unfortunately for both
Prescott and the Cowboys, the security is being needed right away.
Jason Garrett and his
staff did not have that much time (if any) to groom Prescott or even give him
that much time to feel comfortable in the Cowboy offense. The dumpster fire was
just kind of thrown toward Prescott and it his job to find a way to lead a very
talented offense into unsurpassed waters for a young rookie quarterback in that
division. The inability to have Prescott feel comfortable or have any sort of
barring’s around the team may hurt them early on. It is very rare for a rookie
quarterback to lead a team to the playoffs and do well. It has been done, and
with this offense that is in Dallas it might very well happen but who knows.
Unlike the Cowboys first round selection Ezekiel Elliott, Dak Prescott was not
brought in to fill a roll and preform at a high level right away. So with the
added pressure of leading “America’s Team” and the heavy pressure that we will
have leading a possible playoff roster to the expectations of the fans and
glorified owner Jerry Jones, will that break the young rookie?
With a great season
throwing 29 touchdowns with a 66% completion percentage with only 5
interceptions those expectations will be high. Prescott also added close to 600
yards on the ground along with 10 TD’s so finding the happy medium for both
Prescott and the Dallas offense. Even with Romo keeping plays alive and
occasionally running, the Dallas offensive line (whom which I think is the best
in the NFL) will have a tall task adding read options and other quarterback
designed runs to the offense and how that takes away from Elliott and Dez
Bryant’s production.
On top of all of this
when will the Dallas front office call it quits with Jason Garrett? You would
begin to think that if this team doesn’t make the playoffs in basically a two
team division the upper management would have no other choice then to part ways
with Garrett. It is not an unknown fact anymore that within the past 16 years
the Dallas Cowboys have been exactly .500. If I am Jerry Jones, how long do I
go along with mediocrity and the two leading the charge; being Romo and
Garrett.
The Soap Opera that is
the Dallas Cowboys will be very interesting…
