Honest Review #2.10
Honest Review #2.10: Fitztragic
If this game didn’t
validate my article earlier today, then I don’t know what will. The Jets
offensive line gave up six sacks in Tampa Bay. The Jets ruined an opportunity
to get a good road win before the bye week. The Jets ruin a chance to get to
.500 before the bye and give the organization and fan base an opportunity to
re-evaluate the season.
The Jets are now 4-6
heading into the bye week and frankly just took a nap until it was too late.
The Jets didn’t show up on offense or special teams today. Lac Edwards after
having a great week last week against the Buffalo Bills, punted the ball seven
times and had a key 30-yard shank to lead to the field goal for the Bucs.
The offensive was just anemic.
The Jets converted just two third downs in 15 tries. John Morton did a terrible
job of play calling, by calling way too many short passes instead of going down
the field and trying to push the envelope against a struggling Buccaneer
defense. Instead, the Bucs sacked Josh McCown six times and knocked down McCown
a couple more times. Combine that with a run game that could total only 56
yards on the ground.
This game was served on a
silver platter for gang green. Mike Evans was suspended for a game following
his incident in New Orleans just one week ago. Up and coming quarterback Jameis
Winston has been seemingly shut down for the season. The Jets got an opportunity
to get some revenge on an old friend—quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick today in
Tampa.
I will not put this loss
on the defense. The Jets caused a ton of pressure, they created a turnover, and
allowed the offense to continue to try and jump start itself.
What I will not
understand when I look back on this season is why the Jets didn’t throw the
ball down the field to their playmakers. Robby Anderson is one of the fastest guys
in the NFL and he only the ball thrown his way late in the game. Austin Seferian-Jenkins
didn’t get off the plane until the two-minute warning in the 4th
quarter. Chad Henson had a really good game to jump start his NFL career with
three catches for 33 yards. John Morton I guess threw out the sheet of the
playbook with plays that were plays of five or more yards. Morton also stayed
with the run for way too long in the game. Gang green at one point in the game
had three consecutive three and outs with the exact same play calling structure
(run, run, pass attempt, punt). If something isn’t working and the offensive
line isn’t being physical enough at the point of attack, get McCown in the
shotgun and call some plays get drive the ball down the field.
We have an extra week to
digest this loss due to the bye, while looking toward to the up and down
Carolina Panthers, and hopefully look to gain up the ground that they lost this
week. This season has been a season that seems like we are figurines in a snow globe
after it has been shaken (in other words a complete mess).
At this point, going into
the bye, the Jets have to make up their mind if they are going to try to battle
to get to 8-8 or 9-7, or tank and try to get a top pick and loss the rest of
the way. Just like a meteorologist trying to predict what the weather will look
like next Thursday, it is impossible to predict what Jets team will show up in
two weeks at home against Carolina. But, for now, let’s go J-E-TS JETS JETS JETS.
