Day 192

Fresh Start_192: Oh Captain, my Kirk
With Kirk Cousins being franchised tagged by the Washington Redskins for $19.95 Million for the 2017-18 season. Whether you like Cousins or not, he has played exceptionally well over the past two seasons. Over those two seasons Cousins has thrown for 9,083 yards, 54 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and averaged 7.9 per attempt. Cousins is clearly worth some kind of money and whether that is the almost $20 Million that is the franchise tag is up for interpretation.

However, this could be a blessing in disguise for the New York Jets. The Jets as it is well known do not have a stable quarterback situation at the moment and riding the ship wouldn’t be impossible for a season so they can get Kirk Cousins. The money could be more next year for Cousins then it would have been if he hit the open market this offseason, but we may never know. Cousins is one of the most impressive quarterback in the league right now and his market value can increase for a possible contract with the Jets heading into the 2018-19 season.

What the franchise tag does for Cousins is allows him once again to prove his worth and battle the doubters so he can put up the numbers like he has been for the past two seasons. If Cousins puts up another year like he did in this past year, the offers for Cousins will be out of this world from the teams that need a quarterback.

There is also the possibility that the Redskins trade Cousins in the next few months leading to the NFL draft for an overhaul of draft picks. Cousins has already publically said that the only team he would want to play for if he is traded is the San Francisco 49’ers. Most likely because Kyle Shanahan is the new head man in San Fran and he would be able to play for a former OC of his. Even if the trade does go through, the Jets could still steal him in the offseason. This all is a hypothetical because if the 9’ers trade for Cousins, the Browns don’t get Garoppolo or don’t draft a QB at number one, and the Jets draft either Trubisky or Watson none of this will work.

In my opinion, this could work and getting Cousins next season would work if the Jets focus on the larger needs this offseason. As I have implored over the past couple of months since the end of the season, the Jets need Offensive Line help and better number one and two Corners in the Secondary. The Quarterback position is an issue because you don’t know what you have in Bryce Petty or Christian Hackenberg but that isn’t the biggest issue. For all instance and prepossess the Jets could resign Geno Smith for a year and still be fine for the 2017-18 season.

The team is in a difficult position with the amount of talent that is aging and youth on the team is conflicting. The team is in no-man’s-land much like the Yankees were in last year. The Jets are in a position to contend for a playoff spot if they sign the correct free agency and draft the correct players. But, the Jets are in a position to sign Cousins and it could work out for the future.
