Day 212

Fresh Start_212: Hiding in plain site
Does anyone have any faith in Bryce Petty? The word on the street according to the New York sports media is that Josh Mccown was signed just to help Christan Hackenberg, possibly challenging him for the starting spot come Week 1 one the 2017 season. Petty who had surgery on his nonthrowing shoulder back in December should start throwing in April, so why would the Jets not give him a chance.

Some sources close to the Jets said that Hackenberg couldn’t “Hit an ocean with his passes.” Petty in 2016 started 5 games where he recorded 809 passing yards, 3 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, but completed 60% of his passes. If I remember correctly, Mike Maccagan drafted Petty in the 4th round of the 2015 draft and wanted to groom him into the next franchise quarterback sitting behind Ryan Fitzpatrick and Geno Smith. Wasting a valuable 4th round pick on a quarterback that has all the arm talent in the world.

When Petty truly looked like a rookie was when he was blitz, rushed, and threw passes into coverages that he mixed up in his pre-snap reads. But, that is to be expected from a quarterback that has never played. Even though Petty was technically in his second season, he sat the bench just like Hackenberg, so why not give him a chance?

Every Jet fan has seen a small sample size on Bryce Petty, and none of them can honestly sit down with me and tell me that Petty doesn’t have good arm talent. He can make every throw in the book and deserves to have a shot for this starting spot. If it isn’t Petty, then the Jets will be trusting a rookie that apparently can’t hit an open receiver if he was the only player on the field, or a 14-year vet who has traveled all around the league and is at best “a quality backup.” Josh Mccown in 5 starts had 1,100 passing yards, 6 touchdowns, 6 interceptions, and completed 72.3% of his passes.

If you really compare Mccown to Petty, they are the same player, but Petty is the younger player that can grow, while Mccown is the grandfather of the group that needs to become a mentor to Petty and Hackenberg. There should be a true quarterback battle, but at the same time Mccown should be giving advice to Petty and Hackenberg because they will be on the Jets and in the league much longer than Mccown will be.

I personally like the signing because the Jets needed to add another quarterback and to get a guy who has been around the league is important. Understanding that he might win the quarterback battle is to be expected but to say that Petty isn’t in the consideration for the job is ludicrous. Petty is the only quarterback on roster that has had reps with the 1st team offense—that means something. The timing between Petty, Enunwa, Anderson, Peake, and Decker (possibly) is there that isn’t with the other two. To rid off Petty as if he isn’t even on the team is just laughable, when he is mostly likely the best quarterback talent wise on the team. But, that is up to the Jets to realize, I just hope it isn’t too late when they do.
