Day 194

Fresh Start_194: Bettering Spring Training
With the World Baseball Classic right around the corner, the pleading for baseball to be in the Olympics returns. It will return in 2020 in Tokyo which could mean the end of the WBC. From a die-hard baseball fans perspective, I hope baseball never leaves the Olympics again. The creation of the WBC was to expand the game and it has accomplished that.

What it has also done is draw great concerns from teams worried about their players getting ready for the regular season. There is obvious health concerns about the players, playing for nothing in the grand scheme of things. Yes, these players are playing for their countries but it isn’t on the same stage as the Olympics. Now the Olympics will interfere with the regular season, but Major League Baseball can take a break like the NHL does and let their players play for their respective countries. Another thing the game can do is have no All-Star game in 2020 and just let the players focus on the regular season and Summer Olympics. This will also allow some of the highly talented college players play extra baseball after they get drafted, or to improve their draft stock.

It would be a nice change of pace and allow the players to prepare for the regular season in a normal fashion, lowing the chance of injury while still allowing the player a sense of national pride. The end of the World Baseball Classic will be a good thing for the game of baseball and Major League Baseball will see the benefits when the 2020 Summer Olympics come around.
