Day 193

Fresh Start_193: The Jets release yet another Pro-Bowler
I don’t even know what to think this time. With the news breaking last night of the Jets releasing Brandon Marshall according to Adam Schefter. Marshall will most likely retire and work full time at SHOWTIME for Inside the NFL.

This news honestly breaks my heart because Marshall was such an important part of the offense. In his two seasons as a Jet, Marshall recorded 168 receptions for 2,290 yards, and 17 touchdowns. Marshall only missed one game in his Jet career, so why release him?

The Jets reportedly offered to extend Marshall’s contract, but with the rebuilding process under way with the releases of Nick Mangold and Darrelle Revis, Marshall did not want to stick around for the rebuild. So the Jets granted his request to be released according to Kimberly Martin of Newsday.

On top of all that ESPN also reported that Eric Decker will likely miss training camp this year, so there goes one of the best receiving cores in the NFL. Decker and Marshall would have been the key component on the team that would have competed for a championship. Enunwa is still on roster and will only get better, but with doubt if he is a number one or two receiving the Jets will have to get a receiver if they don’t want to rebuild.

But, with the releases of Revis, Mangold, and now Marshall—what is holding up the Jets from rebuilding? The move of granting Marshall’s request to be released is almost a giveaway that the Jets are mailing it in for the 2017-18 season. The Jets have now accumulated $35 Million in cap space, and with this attempt at a rebuild there is no indication that the Jets will spend any of that $35 Million this offseason. IF the Jets were to spend money on another receiver there is only two receivers that deserve top receiver money. Those two are former Browns wide-out Terrelle Pryor and former Bears receiver and former teammate of Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery.

If the Jets are going the route of rebuilding, then I wouldn’t spend the money on any big name free agent. I would draft corners and offensive lineman like I have been preaching, sign Mike Glennon as a security blanket, and I would attempt to sign former Bills corner Stephon Gilmore or former Patriot corner Logan Ryan. If the asking price is too high, I would pocket the $35 Million and try to next year.

I support the rebuild but I have my concerns that I will have to find out in the coming days and months. I will find out when March 9th officially hits and see if the Jets attempt to sign any free agents. I will also see if the Jets over draft a quarterback or whether they will draft the needs of the team. With the releases of Pro-Bowl players that Mike Maccagnan have let go, it is up to him to see through on this rebuild, or at least I assume. A guy like Maccagnan wouldn’t make moves like this unless his job along with head coach Todd Bowles jobs were safe. But, if this is the direction that Maccagnan and the Jets want to go, they have to do this rebuild the right way.

But, with Marshall gone, I will miss him. And for him to only be in a Jet uniform two years to have the impact that he had is not normal. As a Jet fan I will always think of Brandon Marshall as a New York Jet. The security blanket that he was and the way he impacted each and every game is a luxury I will miss and loan to have again. He was the best receiver the Jets had in my lifetime and he will be sorely missed. Good luck on TV or in the NFL with another team. You are always welcome back and JETUP!
