Day 210

Fresh Start_210: No option on this flight
Deshaun Watson should not be the next quarterback of the New York Jets. The way the Jets quarterback situation has been over the past few season, especially when they were successful at the end of the past decade, the quarterback was not an option quarterback. Mark Sanchez was a pocket passer that had a well-tuned running game. Geno Smith was a little different type of quarterback that would stand in the pocket and every now and then if the play broke down, would run the ball himself for some yardage. Ryan Fitzpatrick was the same way, and I think Bryce Petty is the same type of quarterback.

Look at the situations that happen when the Jets signed option quarterbacks in recent history. All Jets fans know what happened with Tim Tebow. The Michael Vick experiment was a decent show for some games, but was an overall bust if you look at it. Watson is the type of quarterback like that, so why would the Jets take a chance like that. It would be different for the Jets and defiantly would take some time to adjust. Watson is an incredible talent, and is one of the most talented players in this draft, and is my highest rated quarterback, but he is not the right fit for the Jets with the team that they have.

I think Watson could be this type of quarterback for the Jets, if he wants to change his game. Deshaun Watson is the closest player to Cam Newton since Newton came into the NFL. If the Jets want to have Watson, they will need to change their personal on the team currently. The Jets also don’t have that type of offensive coordinator either.

John Morton who was hired this offseason to take over the offensive play calling duties under Todd Bowles. Morton was most recently with the New Orleans Saints where he was the quarterback coach for Drew Brees. Brees in his prime years of his career, would take off every now and then to run to get the first down. Brees is an incredible quarterback that has incredible arm talent and is one of the greatest quarterbacks that I have ever seen. John Morton was the invisible puppet master behind Drew Brees that nobody saw. What Morton can do for Petty this season will help Bryce Petty’s career.

As of now, the only two quarterbacks on the Jets roster are Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg. Morton must develop an offensive game plan for Petty or Hackenberg to succeed as the head of the offense. Watson is not on the team and there is no guarantee that he will be on the team. Also, as you know, the holes in the secondary, offensive line, and linebacking core that the Jets have, the quarterback situation is the last thing on my mind. It also seems like I am the only Jet fan that has any confidence in Bryce Petty. I have implored how early it is to give up on Petty this early in his career. I also know that the Jets need to sign or draft another quarterback to fill up a roster spot. I like the option of Josh Mccown as a legitimate backup quarterback that will challenge Petty as the starting quarterback. With this season looking like it will be a complete bust and the start of a rebuild. Why would it make sense for the “quarterback of the future” waste most of his prime of his career with a roster that is not capable of winning a playoff game.

If the Jets draft Marshon Lattimore with the 6th overall pick, and draft linebackers and offensive line for the rest of the draft will benefit the Jets in the long run. Having a complete team is better than having a Super Star quarterback. Just ask Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. The Jets will the chance in the next couple of years to draft their franchise quarterback, it will come in time, just be patient.
