Day 285
Fresh Start_285: Ellsbury Shut down following headaches
*A quick shout out to my brother
Vinny and the Class of 2017 at Burke Catholic High School for graduating
today!*
Shut down… the Yankees
have shut down Centerfielder Jacoby Ellbury for now after he told the team of
headaches. He suffered the concussion on May 24th after colliding
with the centerfield wall, following a great catch in the first inning of that
game against Kansas City. There is no time table for the 33-year-old to return
to action, but this most recent injury is troubling for Ellbury’s career.
Ellbury is in the middle
of a 7-year $153 Million contract—still in line for $84.3 Million over the next
4 years. Ellbury has a well-known injury history including 4 displaced
fractured ribs (missed 37 games in 2010), Fractured ribs (missed 61 games in
2010), then just 10 days later shutting him down for the season because of the
ribs. In 2014 Ellbury had a right shoulder subluxation that caused him to miss
79 games.
This concussion is the
first of his professional career, but the injury history that he has had makes
this that much more troubling. Aaron Hicks is playing well in Ellbury’s absence
(.317/.579/1.016), so his production won’t be missed. The important thing is
the Yankees get Ellsbury healthy as soon as possible. He will see a neurologist
when the bombers get back in town on Monday.
