Day 293
Fresh Start_293: All I can say is WOW at this point
I’ve been cautious to
write this piece for 2 months and some change, but here it goes… I am a firm
believer in the New York Yankees. I have tried to keep my head level with the
bombers for as long as possible. Even with the Aaron Judge hype train starting
and leaving the station, I remained realistic with what Judge could do. I am no
longer realistic.
With it being June 11th,
the Yankees are now 37-23 with a ton of games left on the schedule. The Yankees
are 3.5 games up in the division as they head out to the West Coast to play the
Angels. These bombers end a 6-game AL East home stand and 13 straight games
against AL East opponents on a high note. 5-1 on the home stand and 8-5 over
those 13 games to give themselves a nice lead in the division heading out on a
West Coast trip.
There is no question that
it is still relatively early in terms of the baseball season, and the Yankees
still have a long way to go with some questions that still have to come up
positive for the Yanks. Back when I did my MLB outlook of every team in
baseball before Spring Training, I knew this offense would be good (just not
this good), the bullpen would be one of the best in the game (obviously you don’t
plan for injuries {still a good bullpen}), and the starting rotation would be
decent but shaky (and so far they have been one of the best staff’s in the
entire league).
The Yankees have probably
the best offense in baseball, a good bullpen that will get better when Chapman
gets healthy, and a starting rotation that has overachieved tremendously. Luis
Severino has proved all the doubters wrong; me included, C.C. Sabathia seems
like he has learned how to pitch with less velocity, Michael Pineda seems like
he is starting to deliver on some of his massive potential, and the bombers are
doing this with a struggling Masahiro Tanaka. I personally believe that Tanaka
is hurt and won’t tell Joe Girardi, Brian Cashman, or the Steinbrenner family.
On the offensive side of
the ball, Aaron Judge might be the AL MVP and Rookie of the Year, Starlin
Castro is becoming an elite second baseman, Gary Sanchez is still Gary Sanchez,
and Matt Holiday looks like one of the best free agent signings in recent
memory by Brian Cashman. Holiday is batting .284 with 13 homers and 44 RBI’s
but he also seems like one of the many clubhouse leaders in the Bronx, that these
baby bombers have gravitated around him.
Being a Yankee fan, I pleaded
with the rest of the fanbase back in early 2016, that reinforcements were on
the way, and well they are here and playing extremely well. Not to mention guys
like Gleyber Torres, Clint Frazier, and Justice Sheffield are still in the
minors just waiting for the big-league call. It as exciting as ever to be a
Yankee fan, I cannot wait to see what this roster can accomplish through the
summer, and hopefully into the playoffs in late September. The weather is
getting better, and so are the New York Yankees—just ask Aaron Judge’s 495-foot
homer that he hit earlier today. This may sound familiar, start spreading the
news the Yankees have won today, and LET’S GO YANKEES!
