Day 308

Fresh Start_308: These are the Yankees after all
With the bombers on the down slop as the month of June ends—questions arise whether this current roster can be the roster to play in a playoff game at the end of September. As I noted yesterday, the possibility of going after some bullpen help could be one of the many trades that Brian Cashman makes in July, but he could also trade for a starter.

Jose Quintana has been linked to the Bronx for months now, and doesn’t seem to still be on the table from the rebuilding Chicago White Sox. The White Sox traded away their ace Chris Sale for the best prospect in all of baseball {Yoan Moncada} this offseason to Boston, and even with 3rd worse record in the Majors the Chi-sox don’t look they are blinking on the offers for Quintana. Quintana was 13-12 last year with a 3.20 ERA in 208 innings. He also recorded 181 strike outs in those 208 innings. In the second half of the year last year, Quintana was 6-4 with a 3.19 ERA in 90.1 innings and showed hints of being an ace. This season, Quintana has struggled with a 4-8 record, a 4.69 ERA in 88.1 innings. He does have 88 strike outs—which is just under a strike out per inning, and his struggles on the mound could be a result of the position players surrounding him. Being on the 3rd worst team record wise, can dramatically impact a good or great pitcher, and it seems like it is impacting Quintana. A change of scenery could be what Quintana needs, and with three years of team control, Chicago has a valuable weapon that could grant them a wonderful chest of treasure.

In San Francisco, Johnny Cueto has been linked to the Yanks as a possible trading partner to improve this year’s Bronx Bombers. Cueto is 5-7 with a 4.20 ERA in 100.2 innings with 93 strike outs over those innings. Cueto finds himself on the 2nd worst team in the Majors, and with the hefty contract of $84 Million owed to him in the next 4 years with a 5th year player option of $22 Million it doesn’t seem like they would go after Cueto.

The Yanks have wanted to get cheaper and younger over the past two years, and a trade for Cueto would take the organization one step backwards. I do think that there will be multiple trades to this roster, despite how comfortable Brian Cashman has seemed with the current roster. If the team continues to struggle, that content could turn into doubt and you could see a reliever and a starter making their way to the Bronx. Who it is I am not sure because some players are untouchable, but with the best farm system in the league anything can happen. There are some positional backups in the organization so trading a farm hand or a veteran Major Leaguer could happen in 2017—don’t be surprised if it happens.
