Day 303

Fresh Start_303: The Brooklyn Nets or the New York Jets?
The Brooklyn Nets are trading Brook Lopez and the 27th overall pick in this years’ draft to the Lakers in exchange for D’Angelo Russell and Tim Mozgov.

As a fan of the Nets I don’t really have many words seeing this trade. I don’t like the haul that we get back for Lopez, I hate the fact that we won’t have a draft pick in this years’ draft, and we now have a $54 Million contract eating away at the books from Mozgov. Everything about this trade from a Brooklyn perspective is just awful.

You don’t get a high draft pick for Lopez, you don’t keep the books clear in case you hit lighting in a bottle and get good, and you don’t keep draft picks to help build through the draft. I just don’t get how this trade makes ANY sense from a Brooklyn perspective. Lopez had three years left on his deal, and while trading him this summer would have been a good idea, getting a draft pick or picks back for him would be the ideal way to rebuild.

Not only are the Nets taking over Mozgov’s abominable contract, but you still have Lopez on the books for a season. How the Nets will attract any decent free agents is out of the question, and trying to start a rebuild in 2017 is not possible after this trade. Russell is a decent player who got drafted a few picks to high by the Lakers, and giving the young point guard the reins of a team with no direction should be interesting to watch. Russell has three years left on his rookie deal and will be a restricted free agent after that, so it will be interesting to see if Brooklyn thinks that he is their point guard of the future.

For the Lakers this trade makes all the sense in the world. You clear the point guard position for Lonzo, you make cap space for Paul George and possibly Lebron, you shed a bad contract, and you get a Top 10 big man in the league who can shoot from three. You give an extremely talented point guard in Lonzo Ball the reins for a season, add Paul George and maybe Lebron to the roster next season, on top of keeping a decent supporting cast around the core. This is a home run deal for Magic Johnson and the Lakers. Good job by Magic to deliver his first fleece job within his first year at the helm.

Now this cap dump, might not work and you may only get Paul George to come over in free agency, but that’s still a nice core around Lonzo and Paul George. The Lakers are in a great position to succeed for the long term, while the Nets continue to be the bottom of the cellar kings of the NBA.
