Day 316

Fresh Start_316: Destroying cap space
Apparently to have the ability to compete in the NBA in 2017-18, you have to stretch every penny in your cap to make the best team possible. The Houston Rockets and defending champ Golden State Warriors have just push their cap to the max.

With the signing of Omri Casspi today—it has pushed their cap to $131K which will only allow for a couple players at the veteran minimum. Casspi signed a one-year deal for $2.1 Million. After the Rockets traded for Chris Paul and signed him for $24.6 Million for one year; they have signed Zhou Qi, P.J. Tucker, and Nene all to deals pushing their cap to $115K. Qi signed a four-year deal for still an unknown amount of money, Tucker for $32 Million over four years, and Nene for three years for $10.9 Million.

I don’t understand why both teams would push their cap to this point with upcoming years having the possibility of the cap continuing to shrink. It doesn’t make sense to exhaust your cap space with the very likely possibility of the cap continue to shrink due to the fact that the playoffs will continue to get shorter. Golden State has put themselves in a place that they are going to have trouble re-signing Draymond Green and Klay Thompson. Thompson is a free agent in 2019 (so is Durant if he picks up his option in 2018) and Green is a free agent in 2020. Both Thompson and Green will be unrestricted free agents. You also put yourself in a tough position to resign them to max deals with the moves and shrinking cap. Not to mention the inability to get role player free agents, and will just lean on veteran minimums. It doesn’t make sense.

Houston is in a different situation, they have no depth and no cap. You will have Chris Paul and Trevor Ariza as an unrestricted free agents, and a decent center that has room to grow {Clint Capela} becoming a restricted free agent. You don’t have depth this year in a year that you need guys like Beverly and Lou Williams. You don’t know if Chris Paul will stay in Houston after this year, and if he does he will continue to devastate the cap. Why do this why, someone please tell me…
