Day 329

Fresh Start_329: The Yankee fix
The Yankees are in some trouble. Not only did they split the most important series of the season so far (thanks Jackie Bradley Jr.), Aaron Judge is struggling for the first time this season, the struggling bullpen has been stretched out to the max, and Michael Pineda is done for the season. It was reported late Friday night that Pineda had a tear in his UCL in his throwing elbow and was slotted for Tommy John Surgery. Since seeking a second opinion in Cincinnati—Pineda will undergo Tommy John and end his season and probably his Yankee career.

Pineda is going to be a free agent after this season, and the Yankees are most likely going to part ways with him after the surgery. It is just best with the organization because of how up and down Pineda has been in the Bronx, plus if you sign Pineda in the offseason, you lose him for a total of an entire season (give or take a few games). You have to look toward the future.

That future could be right in front of Brian Cashman and Yankees in the Oakland Athletics. The A’s are sellers this deadline with already sending Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson to Washington for Blake Treinen, Jesus Luzardo, and Sheldon Neuse. The rebuild is on in Oakland, and they have the answers to two of the most needed positions on the current roster. Yonder Alonso and Sonny Grey should be on their way to the Bronx and help this current roster find its way out of the slump that they are in.

A package around Mike Ford and Jorge Mateo with a few lesser pitching prospects that would still keep the majority of the pieces that Cashman grabbed last July. Grey will give the Yankees the pitcher that they have needed all season to pair with Severino and whatever Tanaka will give you during the second half. While Yonder Alonso will give the Yankees the first baseman that they are in desperate need for, plus a bat in the middle of the order that is left-handed and can take some of the pressure off Judge and Sanchez. Let’s face it; you don’t know what you are going to get for Bird, and he might not be back until late September so you can’t keep putting Garrett Cooper and Ji-man Choi on the field day in and day out—it just won’t work. You will no doubt have to give up something to get both of the players but, the asking price for two rental players shouldn’t be that high. If it is, hang up the phone, but I fully suspect Alonso and Grey both to be wearing Pinstripes by August 1st.
