Todd Frazier to the Yankees and maybe more...

Well, the Yankees didn’t get a starter but, they sure did meet some of their needs with a trade with the Chicago White Sox. It didn’t involve Jose Quintana clearly, but it does involve a New Jersey native Todd Frazier.

The Yankees will be sending Blake Rutherford the 3rd overall prospect in system, Ian Clarkin, Tito Polo, and the struggling Tyler Clippard to Chicago in exchange for Todd Frazier, David Robertson, and Tommy Kahnle.

This is a move that you absolutely have to make if you are Brian Cashman and the Yankees because of what you get back for basically Rutherford. You get Todd Frazier that will most likely become the everyday first baseman, the hard throwing Tommy Kahnle who is having a career year in 37 games he has a 2.50 ERA with 60 strike outs in 36 innings, and David Robertson returns to the Bronx.

Frazier is not known for being a first baseman but has played 94 games at first and will likely fill that void. Kahnle will be an arm that they use to maybe make the game a 5-inning game—being the 6th inning guy IF need be, while Robertson will probably fill the role left by Tyler Clippard in the 7th inning. Kohnle at the end of the year will be going into arbitration, with Robertson has another left on his deal, and Frazier becomes a free agent.

This deal isn’t finished however… The Red Sox were also highly pressuring Frazier and to get one over on the Red Sox is always nice, but this also leaves the door open for a possibly Sonny Grey deal. You wouldn’t have to give up as much as I laid out in Fresh Start 329, but giving up Mateo and a player to be named later for Sonny Grey is a no-brainer. In a sense, you would flip Blake Rutherford and Jorge Mateo (the 3rd and 4th overall prospects in your system) for Todd Frazier, David Robertson, Tommy Kahnle, and Sonny Grey. While also keeping Torres, Clint Frazier, James Kaprielian, Justice Sheffield, and Dustin Fowler. In other words, Brian Cashman you’ve done it again!
