Day 340

Fresh Start_340: Two days before the deadline
Just two days before the 2017 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline the New York Yankees find themselves in an interesting position. The Yankees clearly need a starting pitcher to have a real chance to compete for a World Series this year. With the Todd Frazier trade, the Yankees seem like they are buyers for the 2017 season, and yet still have Gleyber Torres, James Kaprielian, Miguel Andujar, Chance Adams, and Clint Frazier in their system.

The Yankees have been tied to Oakland’s Sonny Grey, Texas’ Yu Darvish, and Justin Verlander among others in recent days. The Sonny Grey deal for the bombers would have made sense before the Yankees traded for Todd Frazier because of the need for a 1st baseman with Yonder Alonso being on the Athletics with Sonny Grey.

The price for Grey has been high if you couldn’t tell because he is still on the A’s and not in pinstripes. The trade to me that makes the most sense is a trade that the voice of the Yankees Michael Kay brought up on Wednesday’s broadcast against the Cincinnati Reds. Kay said that the Yankees should trade Jacoby Ellsbury to the Tigers for Justin Verlander. Now, with the trade proposal brought up by Michael Kay has to be adjusted with one of the Yankees top prospects. At this point take your pick excluding Clint Frazier or Gleyber Torres. I would feel comfortable if I was Brian Cashman giving up Estevan Florial the Yankees 5th overall prospect or Jorge Mateo.

Jorge Mateo is a player that I have thrown around in many trades this summer and that is because of the log jam in the infield with Gleyber Torres tearing up the minors and the possibility of signing Manny Machado following the 2018 season, on top of the fact that Didi is just on fire right now—being an All-Star snub the past two seasons.

Mateo’s speed and fielding ability is out of this world and will be incredible tools for Mateo when he finally does make the Majors, but with those factors for me just put Mateo on another team making his Major League Debut. The Tigers would be smart by getting Ellsbury and Mateo for Verlander because of how much Verlander is making over the rest of his contract. Verlander will be getting $28 Million for the next three years (this year included) and $22 Million in the final year of the deal in 2020, Verlander’s age 37 season.

If the Yankees are truly not content with exceeding expectations in 2017 and want to push for a World Series title they will make a strong push for Justin Verlander. Not only to you solve your starting pitching problem, but you get rid of a terrible contract in Jacoby Ellsbury, ultimately freeing up the outfield for Clint Frazier to prosper and helping Aaron Hicks slowly get back in the swing of things when he comes back in August.
