Day 332

Fresh Start_332: What is really going on at ESPN?
I’ve done myself a lot of favors being a critic of ESPN and Fox Sports these past couple of months. Not being a fan of the ESPN cuts and the Fox Sports changing their website has put me into a box that I’ll have a hard time climbing out of. ESPN has done it again with the trial of O.J. Simpson and the coverage of it.

The amount of money and fame that ESPN has gotten O.J. Simpson and his name in the past year is just crazy to think that you gain make that much money and awards off of a convicted felon. ESPN had no position being at the trial hearing for Simpson, it was not a sport story. ESPN felt obligated to be there because of the O.J. documentary and their dying obsession with Simpson. CNN, NBC, Fox News, etc. needed to be there because Simpson is no longer a sports star, but with his murder trial and his robbery conviction he has become a public figure. Simpson’s Ford Bronco chase is more synonymous and more relevant than any of his touchdowns or highlight plays that he had during his playing career.

There is a generation of people that have never seen any of his football highlights but have seen his police chase hundreds of times.

The problem that I have with this is that ESPN sent a Sportscenter crew out to Vegas to cover this trial. Not a reporter but an entire crew of their main show to cover the O.J. parole trial. Something just doesn’t sit right with me about that. Simpson’s football career is a past life at this point. He is 70-years-old and an afterthought in the NFL. Just because the big money maker for ESPN is the NFL and the aforementioned O.J. documentary—ESPN felt inclined to be there. That’s like showing up to your first girlfriends funeral when you’re 70, married, and have kids and grandkids. But, they were there and O.J. got granted parole, so now you have seen EVERYTHING O.J. Simpson has done since 1994 in succession on ESPN in the past year. “The Juice” has been energizing the World-Wide Leader in Sports since lacing up his cleats at USC, and ESPN has been making money off of him like they are one of the people that O.J. owes money too.
