Day 344

Fresh Start_344: Trouble in Baltimore
Joe Flacco was once considered one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL following his 2012 Super Bowl win over the San Francisco 49’ers. Now, he is considered a middle of the line quarterback if not less than average. He has also been on the shelf for some major periods of time over the past two seasons with a knee and shoulder injury. Now, entering the 2017 Training Camp for the Baltimore Ravens he has suffered a back injury. It is unclear how much time Flacco will miss, but it is important time for him to be missing.

Ryan Mallet has been his replacement so far in camp, and everything coming out of Baltimore is pointing to him being on the bench by the time the second Preseason game starts. The question of who is backup quarterback will be in Baltimore and the stopgap quarterback in the wake of Flacco’s injury must be answered.

Colin Kaepernick has been rumored as the possible signing to fix the quarterback whole that they have, but with ownership gaging the fan reaction to this news screams insecurity about signing Kaepernick. I don’t think that the circus surrounding the veteran quarterback is the entire puzzle around the quarterback. The fact that Kaepernick is not signed already with all the backup rolls that needed to be filled this offseason shows how the NFL general managers feel about Kaep’s play on the field.

In the past two seasons Kaepernick’s numbers are: 3,865 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, 9 interceptions, 724 rushing yards, and 3 rushing touchdowns. The arm talent that Kaepernick’s possesses is no joke (perhaps one of the best arms in the entire league), but his decision making with the football in his hand matches up with that talent.

The gig that Kaepernick has put on is over in the NFL, and the kneeling for the National Anthem is just the sprinkles and cherry on top of the Colin Kaepernick sundae.

Where I think the Ravens should look is either put a package together for Jimmy Garoppolo or reach out to Jay Cutler to see if he is interested to come in and play. Cutler is not much better than Kaepernick but he is better. Garoppolo will cost you but that could be the quarterback that could save John Harbaugh’s job. If not; than he could be the Jets head coach going into the 2018-19 season.
