Day 347

Fresh Start_347: Grading the new additions
With Sonny Grey and now Jaime Garcia both barely getting through their first respective starts in Pinstripes it’s fair to give them a grade.

I like both Grey and Garcia and think they will help the bombers as August and September come and pass; it’s just bad luck that they happened to face the remaining American League champs. Grey and Garcia will both help the Yankees win and I think that is well known not only throughout the fan base but from reading various papers articles from the bigger publications the media also seems to get it. The sample size is also only one game, and the team as a whole didn’t give their best collective effort to help Grey and Garcia on back to back nights.

Three errors for Grey and no run support for Garcia against Trevor Bauer—a pitcher the usually hit well the bombers now find themselves three games back of the Red Sox for first in the division.

As far as grades go; I’d give Grey a B/B- for his great performance against Corey Kluber which Grey would have to have been seemingly perfect to beat the 3-hit/1-run complete game that the former Cy Young award winner tossed.

Garcia on the other hand looked like he was pressing in his first start in Pinstripes. And, that happens when you go from a team like Minnesota or Atlanta—finding yourself in the middle of a pennant race in one of the hardest divisions in all of baseball. Garcia did play for St. Louis at the beginning of his career so he has been around the block a few times, but first time butterflies are still expected for anyone being thrusted into a situation like this.

Garcia is also like fellow southpaw C.C Sabathia in that he is a control pitcher. Unlike Severino or Tanaka Garcia relies heavily on his control and the movement of his pitchers to get hitters out. Garcia won’t light up the radar gun with a 98 MPH fastball but will bowl a sinker down and in on your hands. Because of this I have to give him a C- for his efforts against Cleveland. Even without his best stuff, Garcia still kept the Yankees in the game and gave them as much as he could. A valiant effort by Garcia but we will need more from him down the stretch. Good things are expected to come and even with the small sample size of one start, it looks as if the bombers pitching woo’s will come to an end in the second half of the season.
