Day 178

Fresh Start_178: Is Duke back?
After that tough home loss to NC State in late January, the Duke Blue Devils have not only got their coach back, but are on a 6-game winning streak with the statement games at home against #8 North Carolina with an 86-78 win at home, and a 65-55 road win against #14 Virginia.

The Blue Devils have had a roller coaster season with a ton of drama, but this could be the turning point in the season that propels them to the National Championship. With Coach K leaving for back surgery, Duke was expected to struggle. Not to mention the bright spotlight on the dirty play of Grayson Allen, the Blue Devils looked like they were going to have a difficult season.

Regardless of the play of Sophomore guard Luke Kennard, who is averaging 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists—the Blue Devils struggled getting him the ball in some games. Whether that being the team chemistry or just the offensive play calling from the coaches, Kennard is the most talented offensive player and with Krzyzewski back, Duke has noticed that.

Another player that has emerged amongst this 6-game streak is Freshman forward Jayson Tatum. Tatum exploded for 28 points in last night’s road win—going 6-7 from 3-point range. Tatum chipped in with 8 rebounds as well, on top of the two other 19-point games that he has had during this streak.

What this Duke team reminds me of, is the Duke team in 2014 that caught fire in the NCAA Tournament and won the title. Similar circumstances with the team having a rough regular season and getting hot at the right time. If there was any time for a team to get hot, it is right now. whether you like Duke or not, be wary of them for the rest of the season—especially if they win the ACC Tournament.
