NY 500 XXIII
NY 500 #23
This NY 500 is going to
be a little different. While the Nets and Knicks are enjoying the All-Star
break, the Islanders are still climbing the long hill back into the playoff
race, currently in 10th in the Eastern Conference with 64 points. The
Rangers in 4th with 77 points and red hot. The Rangers have only
lost one game in the entire month of February, going back to January—the Rangers
are 10-3 in their last 13 games. The Blue Shirts are looking to go far in the hunt
for Lord Stanley’s Cup.
However, there are two
stories right now in the New York media that are driving the printing presses. Those
are the James Dolan situation with the Knicks, and the Betances contract negotiations
with the Yankees front office.
First, with the Knicks,
can their fans please stop saying that Dolan has to sell the team… While yes he
is a bad owner from a basketball perspective, Dolan still owns the Rangers and
Madison Square Garden. Dolan is doing a great job owning the Rangers with their
recent success over the past 5 years, and the Garden is still the Garden. So,
even with his blundering altercation with Knicks legend Charles Oakley, he
doesn’t have to sell the team, he needs to get better basketball people in the
organization. Also, the Charles Oakley story was completely embarrassing from
an organization stand point and I feel for their fans. In my opinion, the
situation never should have escalated to the point where Oakley was being put
into handcuffs, and the police never should have filed charged. I think that
the reason he was “banned” in the first place was because of the police filing.
Now, with the situation in the Yankees front
office, I am agitated and sadden by the news with Betances. I personally like
Betances and what him to be our setup man for a very long time. I don’t like
the way team president Randy Levine treated Betances during this process. The arbitration
process will happen and getting the $3 Million instead of the $5 will happen,
but the unnecessary comments by Levine will hurt the Yankees when Betances hits
the open market. I wouldn’t be surprised if Betances does in fact leave the
Bombers when he becomes an unrestricted free agent. It will happen and a team
will pay him an incredible amount of money to take the ball every day. I love
the work ethic that Betances brings to the Bronx, I just wish Girardi would
work him a little less. I hope Betances has an amazing season for the Yanks,
and this whole situation can be brushed over with a great season.
