Day 183
Fresh Start_183: The King of Hollywood
Honestly, with all this
basketball news over the past 2 weeks or so, I just want to take a breather. The
latest is that Earvin “Magic” Johnson is taking over the Basketball Operations
for the Los Angeles Lakers. The longtime Laker Legend will be taking the jobs
of longtime GM Mitch Kupchak and VP of Basketball Operations Jim Buss.
This is an interesting
move because of the career of Magic Johnson. While Johnson has owned the Los
Angeles Dodgers for a number of years now, he has had no previous experience in
the Front Office business side of basketball or any sport for that matter. While
this is a big headline move, I don’t think this is a fantastic move right off
the bat. This is coming off of the rumors that the Lakers wouldn’t give up
rookie forward Brandon Ingram in a DeMarcus Cousins trade. Putting a man who
has success in game of basketball in charge of the daily operations of managing
the team from the front office isn’t a good thing. Phil Jackson can be a prime
example of this with the Knicks. Johnson, has been asked who he would appoint,
and he has said that he would reach out to fellow Laker Legend Kobe Bryant. It would
be interesting to see what a Magic and Kobe run front office would look like,
but if I was a Laker fan I would be cautious about this.
Phil Jackson has turned
the Knicks into a dumpster fire of a basketball team in his 2 and a half years
as the head man. Magic Johnson has to extremely careful about the moves that he
makes for the Lakers, because if he makes a strand of bad moves for the Lakers,
he could be run out of town as quickly as he became a star in it.
