Day 104

Fresh Start_104: December Madness might vs. March Madness take your pick
This is why College Football is absolutely insane and the conversation about the College Football Playoff can be exhausting. With the Penn State win over Wisconsin last night, has turned the tables on the playoff, making the “experts” loss their minds! Penn State was down 28-14 at halftime, then outscored Wisconsin 24-3 with a 4th down stop to save the game to upset the number 6 ranked team in the nation and the conversation around all of this, is the talk of just absolute nut chases. Yes, I am included with all those nut chases because I am trying to wrap my head around all of this.

With the win over Wisconsin, Penn State now enters the conversation and in my mind has to get into the playoff, based on two factors. The number one factor is the Big Ten Title resides in Happy Valley for 2016 and you cannot look at that lightly. The Big Ten is the best Conference in all of College Football this year and that is no debate in that just based off the number of teams in the Top 10 that are in the Big Ten (4). The game was against the 6th ranked team in the country and they dominated the second half, making it seem like the best team won. The second factor is the win at home against Ohio State. The Buckeyes are the number two team in the country and they might not make the playoff. The victory for Penn State over Ohio State had the aftermath of a keystone win in the recent history of Penn State, but nobody in their right mind would have thought that, the win would make it a difficult conversation when it came to playoff time. For me I would but Penn State in at number 4 and boot Ohio State out of the Top 4 because of that. It may be Michigan bias, but I just can’t keep the Big Ten Title winner out of the playoff, especially if they have a win over a current Top 4 team. My 2017 College football playoff would be:
1.      Alabama
2.      Clemson
3.      Washington
4.      Penn State
The win for Washington completely shocked me and I think that the win over Colorado for Washington staples them into the playoff and Pac Ten fans rejoice. Bama is the best team in the country no doubt about that at the moment, and I’ve just made my chase for Penn State.

My Michigan Wolverines are somehow in the conversation still despite an overtime loss to Ohio State last weekend on the road. The conversation all week leading up to last night was if Washington losses, does Michigan get in. If Penn State wins and Washington losses, does Michigan get in? Well, to my fellow Wolverine fans, the dream is over, as I predicted after the loss to Ohio State. I knew we would need an immense amount of luck, and it was almost impossible to have Michigan in the playoff. The Wolverines had a good season and Jabrill Peppers has a chance at a Heisman, so hang your hat on that, watch the bowl that Michigan gets in, and hope for better in 2017.

Now for Clemson, they have an interesting scenario for Clemson’s Quarterback Deshaun Watson. Watson is the QB of a Top 4 team and has now two consecutive ACC Championships under his belt, and yet another chance at the Heisman Trophy. Watson is in the conversation for the Heisman in the quietest Heisman race in the history of College Football. Watson has thrown for 3,626 yards with 34 touchdowns to only 14 interceptions and ran for 444 yards with 4 more touchdowns on the ground. All of this with still having the chance for a National Title, Watson has the chance to be the number one overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. He also has the chance to decline to go to Cleveland if they do draft Watson in April, and that is something we haven’t seen since Eli Manning. John Elway also did this when he was drafted, and as one of my favorite sports personalities; Colin Cowherd has predicted I think it will happen. I think Watson will run the table. He will fly back to Clemson with the Heisman in hand and he will take care of business against my number 3 team Washington, and beat Alabama for revenge for Clemson, finally demanding that he will not play for the Cleveland Browns. Oh how I love College Football and the mayhem that ensues at this time of year. This is partly because I am in favor of an expansion of the playoff, but that is another debate for another day. The College Football Selection show is Today, December 4th @ Noon EST on ESPN. For all of the stressed fans, get a good night sleep, hope and pray. To the Selection Committee, Good luck fella’s!
