Day 129
Fresh Start_129: Be on the lookout for this guy
*A little note before
today’s Fresh Start… The Week 17 picks will go up on Saturday morning, there is
no Thursday game this week, so I want to get the most accurate lines as
possible for the last week of my picks. I will be doing picks for the playoffs
but without the lines. *
It’s that time of year in
college football where you start to look toward next season. With the majority
of the bowl games over and done with—and the National Championship just about
to get underway, let’s look forward to the 2017-18 college football season and
one player in particular. That player is UCLA Quarterback Josh Rosen. Rosens’
2016 season was cut short due to an injured left shoulder that he suffered in a
loss to Colorado on November 4th. Rosen will be entering his Junior
season next year and he will currently be the 2nd ranked quarterback
on the big boards of NFL teams behind this years’ Heisman winner Lamar Jackson.
Rosen might even have a better career in the NFL than Jackson due to the system
that he is in under Jim Mora at UCLA.
In his Freshman season, Rosen
threw for 3,760 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions with a 60%
completion percentage. Rosen was on pace for that this season, throwing for
1,915 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions with a 59.3% completion
percentage. He was currently on the Heisman watch while he was playing, and
moving into 2017 I would definitely have
him on my radar for the Heisman next season. I wouldn’t bet money that he would
go in front of Lamar Jackson if they both enter the draft—but it could be a
possibly with the way that Rosen can throw the ball. I would compare Rosen to a
hybrid between Matt Ryan and Matthew Stafford. Rosen has the ability to run but
doesn’t do it often and also is a gun slinger like Stafford. However, Rosen has
a similar throwing motion and accuracy as Ryan. I think he will have the same
hype around him as Blake Bortles or Ryan Tannehill, but have a better pro career
than both of those players.
My advice to Rosen would
be to stay all 4 years because of the injury to his left shoulder this season. The
shelf life of a quarterback is greater than a runningback or linebacker so he
will have to grow in college. Plus, with Jackson still at Louisville, Rosen is
not the number one QB in his own class. If he stays, he would be the best QB in
the 2019 class and go off the board earlier than if he enters with Jackson. The
teams that will need a quarterback will not fill all of their spots, even with
Jackson by the time that Rosen leaves after his senior year. Rosen will be an unbelievable
pro player, and I am just bringing his bandwagon into the spotlight so you can
hope on the bandwagon before it is too late.
