Day 113
Fresh Start_113: Black Monday has come early
It’s about time right? The
Jeff Fisher era with the Rams is officially over, and like Eric Dickerson, we
can all go on with our daily lives again… right? We should all be happy as NFL
that Fisher is without out a job. Because let’s not kid ourselves here, Jeff
Fisher is not a good coach. Fisher as a head coach in his career is 173-165-1
throughout his 22-year career as a head single caller.
Fisher had his share of
hardships as the head man for the Rams, but that is just life in the NFL. As a
defensive coach, he has a very well coached defense—at least in his Rams
career. The Bradford pick didn’t work and that is probably the biggest miscue
that the Rams have had under Fisher, but it’s the NFL and you need to find a
way to win games. And winning games for Jeff Fisher hasn’t come so easy in his
Rams tenor. Fisher didn’t have a winning season with the Rams and honestly I don’t
know how he lasted 5 seasons with the organization. To some of Fisher’s credit
the move from St. Louis to Los Angeles has been anything but easy. The whole
hard knocks fiasco to the way that they have been playing on the field. Fisher should
have been let go 2 or 3 years ago, and gets what was coming his way. Fisher in
these final weeks seemed to have lost his players in the locker room—with Pro
Bowl running back Todd Gurley saying that the offense was “a middle school
offense.” Gurley was screaming at rookie quarterback Jared Goff on Sunday in
the blowout loss to the Falcons.
Fisher is not a good
coach, we can stop trying to force ourselves to like the guy and route for him.
It’s just plain and simple at this point, he isn’t good enough to coach in the
league anymore. What Fisher was in the glory days of his Tennessee days isn’t
the coach that was walking out of the Rams facilities on Monday morning. The old
school coach has to retire at some point. Milk goes sour after a while and Jeff
Fisher is well after his expiration date. It isn’t all bad for Fisher, he did receive
a nice parting gift of an extension last week; which had the stinking smell of
the Alex Rodriguez deal that the Yankees made this past August. The extension
of Fisher last week just didn’t make any sense, and made all of the “experts”
and fans around the league do a double take. We couldn’t believe our eyes, like
when Pete Carroll called a pass play on first and goal from the one (sorry
Pete, love ya). This seems like the day after regret of sleeping with someone
you shouldn’t have from the Rams prespective, and as a fan of the NFL I’m glad
the Rams are cleaning up their act, and trying to make football in L.A. a
marketable product again.
