In between the Pinstripes #26

In between the Pinstripes_26: Aaron Judge; what else is there to say?
Is anything to say at this point besides WOW!? Aaron Judge is just a robot, he mashes home runs, has a cannon for an arm, has decent speed, and says everything you want him to the media. This young bomber has taken over the back pages in New York, and as a Yankee fan you would think we are used to this… you know because of Gary Sanchez, but honestly I can’t believe this. Judge hit 2 more home runs tonight, and if he hasn’t arrived yet he did tonight. Judge joins Alex Rodriguez and Babe Ruth as the only two Yankees to have 12 homers in their first 25 games of a season. If you are in a group with those two guys, you’ve both something special. Judge officially went: 2-3, 3 runs, 2 homers, 4 RBI’s, and 2 walks. I couldn’t give my Focus Player of the Day to anyone else. Brett Gardner had an honor mention type of night; going 3-5, 2 homers, and 3 RBI’s.

The story here really is Aaron Judge. He has stolen the spotlight from a team that is back in first place at 16-9 and is just clicking on all cylinders. Tanaka tonight went 6.1 giving up 7 hits, 4 earned runs, walked none, stroke out 2, and that’s an afterthought. With the way that Judge is playing, being a Yankee fan I can’t help but dream of Judge and Sanchez back to back in the order, because honest tell me who do you pitch too? If both of those guys are going right, the question is how long do you want the ball to go out of the yard? The way Judge is playing is unbelievable, but you have to expect a slump at some point. He will not continue to hit 12 homers every 25 games; that’s just not baseball. Hopefully by the time he starts to get into that slump, Holiday, Castro, or Sanchez will be able to carry the load while he figures it out. One thing can be said about Aaron Judge, and that is that he is a true Major League player and will be here for a LONG time.

However, on a day where the bombers win 11-5, it doesn’t common without some concerning news. Greg Bird went on the 10-day DL before the game with a sore right ankle. This can be one of the catalysts of why he was struggling so much (.100/.250/.200), and hopefully he can get that right soon. Austin Romine also left tonight’s game with tightness in his groin, so if Romine is out for an extended period of time, the Yankees would be relying on their 3rd and 4th catchers in the organization and have them handle this staff until Sanchez gets back. So not the worst news in the world, but it’s something to think about.

Looking ahead to tomorrow’s game; it’s going to be a great rubber match. C.C. Sabathia is going against the Jays ace Marcus Stroman. Sabathia is coming off a bad outing where he went 5.2 innings, giving up 9 hits, 7 earned runs, 2 walks, and stroke out 6. That game also happened to be the game that the bombers completed the improbable comeback against the Orioles. Stroman is coming off back to back gems. Two starts ago Stroman went the distance; giving up 7 hits, 2 runs, only one walk, and strike out 5. His last start was a 7.1 inning, 5 hit, 2 run, and 10 strike out performance in front of the home fans in Toronto. Stroman in 8 career starts against the Yanks, owns them. Stroman is 5-2 with a 2.17 ERA in 49.2 innings, with a .193 batting average against. In other words complete domination when the young star right hander sees the pinstripes at the plate. But, the Yankees won tonight, they’re back in first place, so you can “Start spreading the news” and look forward to a tough but fun rubber tomorrow in the Bronx. We might need some luck.
