In between the Pinstripes #27
In between the
Pinstripes_27: Down but not out
Not the prettiest of
wins, but a win is a win. With the win the bombers also extended their lead in
the division to 2 games, and they get some confidence finishing up the home
stand. Going 4-2 and getting sole control of 1st place in the AL East
is a nice way to head out of town. The game didn’t start off that great, with
C.C. giving up 4 runs before the Yanks even came to the plate. The bombers also
trailed 6-3 before Aaron Judge hit a 2-run bomb—his 13th of the year
(1st Yankee to do that).
The bullpen did a great
collective job to keep the Blue Jays at bay and allow the Yanks to come back
and take the lead in the bottom of the 7th. A Chris Carter single
tied the game, Didi with a pinch-hit single to give the Yankees the lead, and
Aaron Hicks with a bases loaded walk to extend the bomber lead to 2 pretty much
wrapped up the game in a nice bow. That’s because of the back end of the pen
for the Yankees and the fire power that Betances and Chapman possess. As Michael
Kay put it on the telecast: “it’s basically a 7-inning game with Betances and
Chapman; they’ll have their hiccups… but for the most part if you don’t have a
lead heading into the 7th, the game is over.” He’s right, you don’t
often see guys throwing 100 MPH from either side.
Getting into the Focus
Player of the Day; I’ll give you a guess as to who it is… If you said Aaron
Judge you’d be correct. I almost feel like I’m cheating giving Judge the Focus
Player of the Day all the time, but to be honest he deserves it. Judge is
playing out of his mind right now and I cannot think of any other worthy candidate
tonight. Judge was 3-5 tonight with 3 RBI’s, 2 runs scored, and that big 2-run
homer to keep the game within reach. The young right fielder is taking the game
by storm and the league going to have to catch up. Once Sanchez gets back and
the true Yankee lineup takes the field, this team is going to be scary. I cannot
wait for that.
Speaking of Gary Sanchez,
when we see the Yankees again, Sanchez might be in the lineup. After an off day
tomorrow the bombers head to Chicago to play the defending Champion Cubs for a
weekend series at the friendly confines. Kyle Hendricks is scheduled to the
ball for the Cubs while the Yankees haven’t announced a probable starter, but
you would assume it would be Pineda with an extra day of rest. Hendricks in his
last outing had an interesting outing against the Red Sox. Hendricks went 6
innings, giving up 3 hits, 2 runs, striking out 6, and got the no decision.
Hendricks was losing for most of his outing but kept the Cubs in the ball game
for as long as possible. Hendricks has also never faced the bombers, so the
professor should be in for an another interesting outing. Pineda is coming his
3rd win of the year against the Orioles, and will have a tough shot
for his 4th of the year. I am extremely excited to see the Yankees
back in Wrigley Field—especially for an old-fashioned Friday matinee. For now,
and until Friday you can celebrate first place, a comeback Yankee win, and
another in division series win. You can also “Start to spread the news” that
the Yankees are the best team on the AL East, and are finally getting healthy.
