In between the Pinstripes #28
In Between the
Pinstripes_28: Gardy goes Yardy!
It’s official, I truly
love this team. This team has a “never say die” attitude each and every game,
and it’s just infectious. Today seemed liked one of those days that just seemed
like a brain fart from the Yankees with the bad base running decisions to land
the game at 2-0 going into the top of the 9th. Headley singles to
give the Yanks a chance, Chris Carter strikes out (and is quickly my most
disliked player on this team behind Headley), Ellsbury had a pinch walk to
bring the top of the order, and bring up Brett Gardner. Gardner hit a 3-run
homer to give the bombers the lead heading to the bottom of the 9th.
Aroldis Chapman came in and almost had a 1,2,3 bottom of the 9th if
it wasn’t for Chase Headley’s error, and the Yanks go back to the hotel with a
1-0 series lead against the defending champs.
The bad base running was aggravating,
frustrating, and just down right unacceptable which ALMOST cost the Yanks the
game. If it wasn’t for the strength, the grit of Brett Gardner fouling off
pitches to get to the homer, and a gust of wind to send the ball into the right
field bleachers. However, the Focus Player of the Day is Michael Pineda because
of how great of a job he did keeping the bombers in the game for how long he
was in the game. Pineda went 6 innings, 3 hits, 2 earned runs, one walk, 6
strike outs on 90 pitches. Pineda probably could have gone into the 7th
if his spot in the order wasn’t second the following half inning. Pineda got a
no decision, but pitched well yet again against the defending champs, and I am
actually optimistic about Pineda’s season.
Moving to tomorrow’s
game; it’s a pair of southpaws in the windy city. Jordan Montgomery gets his
first real test against Brett Anderson. Anderson is coming off a decent winning
outing; going 6 innings, giving up 5 hits, 3 runs, walking 6, and striking out
3. In his career; Anderson is 0-4 with a 6.53 ERA in 5 career starts with a
.328 batting average against. Again, hopefully the numbers will hold true
tomorrow night. But, the Yanks had another comeback win, so you can “Start
spreading the news” it is a great Friday night in New York with a matinee win
in Chicago.
