Day 45
Fresh Start_45: Can we do that again?
With both of the wildcard
games over and done with, and two great ones at that. First in Toronto with the
pitcher’s duel and the call not being made to Zach Britton in the bottom of the
eleventh. I wouldn’t blame Buck Showalter for going to Ubaldo Jimenez in that
situation. The Jays lineup is jam packed with right handed hitters. Edwin
Encarnacion just hit an absolute meatball right down the middle. You cannot go
to a left in Britton in that situation with all those power bats hitting
against lefties. The best pitcher on the staff is Britton but he has to be on
ice in the eleventh against the three batters leading off the eleventh.
For last night in
Flushing… What else is there to say besides it’s just Bumgardner and an even
year. For clarity my podcast partner and my friend Nick Paradies is the
originator of the “even number year” conspiracy theory in the Giants winning
the World Series. Madison Bumgarnder is the best starting pitcher in playoff
history. There is nothing that Mad Bum can’t do in October. The San Francisco
Giants have been here before, and are cool, calm, and collected—just business
as usual. The experience on the Giants is unmatched in this generation of
baseball. Noah Syndergaard did as well as he could, with the amount of pitches
and just the way the lineup turned over in the seventh inning. The valent
effort by Syndergaard was extremely impressive, and the play by Rene Rivera the
Mets catcher to me was even more impressive based on where he was just a couple
months before. Rivera didn’t have a job in April and called a great game, and
kept a lot of balls in front of him.
The impossible run by the
Mets being 60-62 on August 20th and having injuries almost every day
has to be applauded. I am not a Mets fan, but I am impressed with what the team
did, given who the players were on the field and the inexperience on the
diamond. It is almost identical in what the Yankees were going through, except
the Yankees didn’t make the playoffs or have the injuries that the Mets did. To
all of my friends that are Mets fans, don’t be sad, you had a great season. I
know how unsetting the one and down can be, I experienced it last year with
Yankees in the Wild Card game. Be upset and sad for now, but in time you will
realize what the season was, and how amazing it was. You will also pull up a
chair with the rest of the baseball family, and watch the incredible baseball
playoffs and all unbelievable moments. Thank you both Giants and Mets for
making the game I love and the playoff setup I have come to love, even more
awesome.
