Day 81

Fresh Start_81: Weed growing in the NFL
Whether you liked the outcome of the election or not, your state might be getting a nice wrapped basket of marijuana in the mail in 2017. 7 states in total legalized the use of marijuana for different uses. Maine, California, Nevada, and Massachusetts all legalized weed for recreational use. While Florida, North Dakota, and Arkansas legalized medical uses.

The NFL following election day also had to look at these new baskets of marijuana. 3 of the owners in the league said that the league should be more open about the use of marijuana in the league. Of course, it wouldn’t be legal completely for the players to use at their own pleasure but it would be available as a pain medication. Several ex-players have raved about the benefits that marijuana can have for the players as pain medication. Several other owners said that they would be open to league using the drug already.

The NFLPA will look into the use of medical marijuana as a pain supplement that could replace other drugs with far greater Sid effects and greater chances at addiction. With teams in three of the states that passed laws related to marijuana it would be a good idea. However, that raises the question about every other state with an NFL team that hasn’t passed any law, what would they do? Would this push the hands of the new law makers that will take the office in 2017. The new marijuana rules in the NFL will most likely be under the presidency of Donald Trump, so it should be interesting to see what happens there. Also, for players that have been suspended because of the use of marijuana or will be suspended when the rule gets passed down, what happens to them?

If a player is serving a suspension and has to pay a fine, does the fine get reimbursed and does the suspension get repealed. For players like Josh Gordon, do they get let back into the league with a fresh slate and will teams welcome those players back with open arms?

Legalization in this country moving forward is growing vastly and the rules following the use of it in pro sports in the country should be very interesting. Surprisingly the NFL is taking the charge with this social issue which is surprising, and players like Trent Williams, who have been busted for using marijuana what entails for them.
