Day 89

Fresh Start_89: McCann to Houston
The Yankees are going all in for the rebuild, trading away Brain McCann on Thursday to the Astros for pitching prospects Albert Abreu and Jorge Guzman. McCann was on the decline with the bombers only batting .242 with 20 homers and 58 RBI’s. McCann also lost his job to rookie sensation Gary Sanchez in late august. There will be a battle for the back-up catcher role, with the clear cut favorite being Austin Romine. Romine in limited action with the big league club batted .242 with 4 homers and 26 RBI’s, while slugging .382.

It was clear that the Yankees were moving on from McCann when they moved him to the DH role last year, and with his lack on need on the team with Sanchez playing as well as he was at the time and has shown what he is capable of doing, it was about time for both parties to move on. The bombers are getting younger and are clearing cap space at the same time. The overhaul of players is in full swing and as a Yankee fan, I can’t wait to see what the future has in store. Gearing up for another championship run with prospects that have gone through the system is something the Yankees haven’t done since the time I was in diapers.

Some news on both of the new comers to the Yankees. Both have the ability to reach 100 MPH and have legit live arms. Cashman said that they are both long ways away but the potential is there for the both of them. Abreu in the Florida State League went 3-8 with a 3.72 ERA in 24 games, which he started 16 of. Guzman in the Gulf Coast League went 3-4 with a 4.05 ERA in 13 games (8 starts). Both of them seem to be bullpen arms with the ERA’s they displayed in the early leagues. Guzman is expected to start 2017 in Low A ball while Abreu most likely will stay in Tampa after Spring Training (if invited) to play in A ball.
The Yankees displayed a dominate bullpen at the start of 2016 and with these two arms, the yanks hope that one day with these two in the picture, it will be something similar. The bombers are reportable in touch with Edwin Encarnacion and Carlos Beltran in the DH market and have reached out to Chapman about returning to the Bronx. The Yankees will need to sign either Encarnacion or Beltran to give the ball club some veteran presence and keep the young guys on the right track. It will be an interesting offseason for the bombers and the 2017 Yankees will be younger and a better team than the one that played in 2016. Brett Gardner is also being shopped around the trade mill to see if he has any interest, so that will be an interesting story to follow. All in all, the Yankees seem to luck out in this deal, gaining two live arms and getting McCann’s contract off the books. McCann did what he was asked to do in the Bronx and was a nice stop gap for the team, while Gary Sanchez was fine tuning his skills in the minors. Best of luck to McCann in the latter half of his career and you are always welcome back in the Yankee family.
