Day 90
Fresh Start_90: This needs to get fixed!
The Womens basketball
committee to fix the ranking system… The UConn women’s basketball team is
ranked number 3 in the rankings to start the season, and I just don’t see how
that is even conceivable. The team has won 77 in a row and are the three time
defending champs, coming off one of the most impressive seasons in women
basketball history (in terms of margin of victory). Geno Auriemma has become
one of the best coaches in college sports of all-time and has created a culture
in his locker room, like Nick Saban has done at Alabama, or John Wooden did
back in the day with his UCLA Bruins.
In my mind, the team that
has won three in a row deserves some respect for just dominating the league,
and becoming the closest thing to a WNBA team as possible, and might actually
be better than some WNBA teams. On Thursday the Lady Huskies beat number 2
Baylor at home 72-61 behind freshman Crystal Dangerfield who collected 19, 4,
and 5 off the bench. The rankings will shake up after Tuesday and the Lady
Huskies have a game this afternoon on the road traveling to play LSU. Number 1
Norte Dame is playing number 17 Washington today as well, so the Huskies could
be number one by the time they wake up Monday morning for classes. With the
lack of national coverage that women’s basketball and women college sports get
it is tough to get a strong following behind it. But, with the conversations
about the BCS and the Men’s basketball committee being fix, the conversation
needs to also include the Women’s basketball committee as well. I know Auriemma
doesn’t care what his rank is, he is just focused on winning games, it needs to
be fixed. If a Men’s team was doing what Auriemma’s huskies are doing, the
coverage would be through the roof and the ratings would be insane, with the
final half being watched like Game 7 of the Cubs/Indians every single game.
The growth of the women’s
game is at an all-time high and with the increase in scholarships, the play on
the floor for the women will only get better. It is an exciting time to a
women’s college basketball fan, and if I was a fan of the Lady Huskies, I would
be pissed!
