Day 82

Fresh Start_82: DV in MLB
Domestic Violence will be the everlasting shadow that will be cast over the 2016 MLB season. Jose Reyes, Aroldis Chapman, and Hector Olivera have all faced survive suspensions because of the domestic violence. The domestic violence problem has plagued Major League Baseball for the past two decades. This isn’t just an issue in the NFL, this is a serious problem in Major League Baseball. There is no set penalty for domestic violence and there shouldn’t be in a 162 game season. This is an issue that pro sports are currently facing that needs a serious punishment for the accuser and the guilty party.

The guilty party in this new case is New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred is giving Familia leeway for now due to the new CBA deadline being December 1st. The investigation is open on Familia for now and will be for the future. This is a possible nail in the coffin for a very shallow New York Mets pitching staff. The majority of the pitching staff in Flushing is on the shelf right now. With Harvey, deGrom, Matz, and even Syndergaard is a little banged up. If what Familia is being accused of is true, an optimistic Mets team will turn into another rendition of the 2016 Mets.

The Mets now have to look for another possible option at closer for the 2017 season. That doesn’t mean that the Metropolitans have to get a big name closer like Chapman, Jansen, or Melancon and give up the big money for one, the Mets will lose in 2017. If the Mets give a good set-up a decent contract for a couple of years and delay the effects of a possible suspension of Familia. The Mets are in a really close division and for Familia to let his team down and give up at least 30 games is a detriment to the team and just something a professional doesn’t do for a potential playoff team. This could be the Trent Williams situation for the Mets that the Washington Redskins are currently dealing with. For Major League Baseball, you need to get this situation right for the future. This domestic violence issue is the new steroid era in baseball. For the game they have two battles to fight, and solving them are equally as important.
