Honest Review #10

Honest Review #10-What the Bryce!?
UNCLE! I was extremely happy that Bryce Petty was starting when I woke up this morning, and thought this Rams defense was the perfect defense to get his career started for the next franchise QB for the Jets. The first half wasn’t all that bad, and the Jets had the lead entering half and were getting the ball back on the other side. The second half on the other hand, looked like it was going into slow motion. Petty looked like a first time starter, as he just missed throws, and the offensive coordinator Chan Gailey just didn’t trust Petty at all.

I’m not going to say the coaches are out to get Petty, but they don’t trust him 100% and that is exonerated by the play calling in the second half. The Rams had the ball for 34:29 minutes and it showed on key third downs that they Jets were tired and didn’t have enough gas to get off the field. This defense made a terrible Rams offense look like a mid-tier offense in the league. The Jets did shut down Todd Gurley only giving him 64 yards on 21 carries, and that is what they set out to do for this week. That’s where the positives for this week stop.

For the second week in a row, the Jets special teams let them down. After an off-sides penalty let the Dolphins return the game winning touchdown, the Jets miss an extra point and botch a punt in a 3-point loss to just a horrible team. The Jets are in the market for a new kicker and a new punt returner. At this point the losses because of simple things that should be just what they are, SIMPLE FOOTBALL PLAYS, that make the Jets a realistic 3-7 after ten weeks. I said this last week and I was just a week early and I apologize for that, but you need to play good before and after the bye week. That is something the Jets didn’t do this week.

Bryce Petty didn’t play that well, but he didn’t just make a joke of himself on the field. He has talent and that was shown on some of the balls that he threw and it is just way too early to over react on one pass that was just a rookie mistake that will go away with reps and experience. With that said, a 3-7 team with the amount of talent on this squad makes me want to rip my hair out of my head after each and every loss. I know I say it a lot, but just look at the talent that is on both sides of the ball and how poorly they have been placed to succeed, and that is at the fault of the coordinators on both sides of the ball.

The lack of confidence, originally, and spark that the offense is showing makes me loan for the days of Marty Morninhinweg. The defense needs to find new ways to bring pressure and needs to cut the amount of zone coverage that the team is playing, because that is just not the scheme that the personal is able to play to succeed. This defense is a man defense that thrives off of pressure and making offenses look like they are chickens with their heads cut off. The amount of pressure and turnovers that this defense has created this season, is an absolute joke. I say and preach that this defense is one of the best in the league, and they are, but they aren’t playing the brand of football that this team has played to make them successful.

For the offense, do not over react on a rookie making a play that a rookie is expected to make with lack of reps in the league. Let’s not kid ourselves, Bryce Petty is the future for the Jets and the Jets will go as far on offense as he is willing to take us. The next game is against the New England Patriots and that is a defense that will make a 3-7 team look like the Cleveland Browns. The offense busted out a hook and latter play to score a touchdown today, and a team that is struggling gave a little life to a team on life support. Give this team time to grow through a week off and give Petty most of the first team snaps in the next two weeks. The defense always makes Brady think and hopefully we will see that happen in week 12 at home. The offense just needs to make the talent on that side of the ball shine like they are supposed to. Brandon Marshall has to be the main focus of the offense, followed by the committee of running backs that get time in the back field. Matt Fortè has actually been carrying his weight the past couple of weeks, this week going for 98 on 20 carries.

So don’t freak out over a week, and be optimistic about the future, from what we saw in the game today. I am with you that the product of play that is currently being ran out on the field these past couple of weeks, isn’t what we want for the short term, but this Jets team are in the middle of a long term overhaul (remember, just two years ago, this team was being ran by Rex Ryan and backed by Geno Smith). So like Aaron Rodgers once said “R-E-L-A-X” everything will work out in the long run, and don’t throw Todd Bowles under the bus, because he will give this team the best chance to win, when the team is completely assembled and can compete for a championship. So, let’s have a nice week off and spend time with our families and not have a heart attack or rip our hair out next week, prepare for New England in two weeks. On to New England and LET’S GO J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!
