Day 140

Fresh Start_140: Boatgate
Odell Beckham Jr. is not an easy person to vouch for… With all of his antics, dances, Instagram highlight taps, and off-field distractions—he might be the hardest to vouch for in the entire NFL. I have back the Giant wide out this entire year throughout all the antics Beckham did with the kicking net. That is just the baggage that comes with the player that is one of the best receivers and arguably the most electric player with the ball in his hands in the entire league.

What happened in the NFC playoff game in Green Bay last night, is just a part of Beckham’s career that he will have to make people forget. It will be hard after he punched a wall and banged his head on a door in the visiting locker room, but people will forget if he plays better next season, and wins a playoff game in the process. The obvious cop out for people is that Beckham went to Miami last weekend to hang with teammates and friends of his on a boat. He said “that this week was a great week of preparation and he had no drops…” And at this point you either take his word for it, or you discredit his entire season with one bad game due to a trip he took a week before a playoff game. I will admit that going to Miami to hang with friends before the biggest game of Beckham’s career isn’t the smartest decision, but Sterling Sharpe and Victor Cruz also went on the trip with Beckham, and they aren’t getting questioned about this. The Giants organization must have okayed the trip, or Beckham wouldn’t have been in Miami last weekend.

I will say that I have been critical of Beckham and that can happen if you jump on the grenade that gets tossed his way in times like this. If you continued history to be critical of Beckham with his antics, your opinion, tweet, or article is slightly deluded due to the bias against. You could say the same thing that are in his corner every time, but I am somewhere in the middle. I’m not saying I have the only correct opinion about Beckham, just analyze this situation differently than his past.

Beckham is the closest player the NFL has had to Terrell Owens or Chad Johnson in a long time. Beckham is a diva and that isn’t going to go unnoticed anymore. It’s just who he is, and that is okay as long as his play on the field doesn’t diminish that much from game to game—season to season. This season Beckham was 3rd in the NFL in receiving yards with 1,367. Beckham also had 101 receptions which was also 3rd in the NFL. Despite a slow start to the season, Beckham also ended the season with 10 touchdowns. This is his 3rd straight season with over 1,000 yards receiving in his short 3-year career with it also being the 3rd straight season he has caught over 10 touchdowns. This was the 1st year however Beckham caught over 100 balls in a season, and that should become a habit really quick, I would assume.

There is no doubt that Odell is one of my favorite players in the league, but with the play that he has produced in his career, his antics can be justified because of how incredible he is with the ball in his hands. There is no other player like Beckham in the NFL; not even Antonio Brown or Jarvis Landry (two of Beckham’s close friends). So I wouldn’t recommend going on a boat in Miami before a playoff game, but if you are Odell Beckham Jr. it can be justified (a little). I would like to think Beckham would learn from this experience and make the necessary changes for next season. And, to any writers bashing Beckham for this, be careful with what you say; if you mess with a bull—you get the horns!
