NY 500 XIV

NY 500 #19
Even a day late on a Holiday weekend in New York, it was a disappointing weekend for us New York sports fans. The Knicks didn’t deliver on MLK day and the Rangers have seemed to hit a dry spot in the season. The Nets are still the Nets, so can be said about the Islanders. Not a good first weekend without football in New York. The Giants first round exit is slowly becoming a scab, and the boat talks have gone out to sea as they should have. The Jets have been in offseason mode for a while—with the biggest news in the past week is the Brain Winters signing and Brandon Marshall paying his debt to Antonio Brown.

Starting off with the Knicks… Thanks to a Dennis Schroder late 3-pointer to lift the Hawks over the Knicks yesterday, the Knicks now have to ask themselves questions about their roster. Missing the unicorn aka Kristaps Porzingis is not easy, but the Knicks need to find an answer for the points they are missing with Porzingis on the shelf. Brandon Jennings doesn’t seem like the answer getting 20 minutes off the bench and only putting up 2 points, 3 rebounds, and a single assist. Joakim Noah is not the answer at center and needs to be moved to the bench when Porzingis gets back.

The Rangers have found themselves in the middle of a 3-game losing streak with Goalie Antti Raanta out 7-10 days with a lower back injury. The Blue Shirts find themselves just on the short end of the stick in close 1 goal games. A mini road trip for 2 games might be what the Rangers need to get back to their winning ways. The Rangers have fell outside the Top 10 in Goals against (14th) and Penalty Killing percentage (16th). The Rangers have also fallen to 5th in the East over the past week even with a win against the hot Columbus Blue Jackets. I did like what the Rangers did for a former NYPD Detective (Steven McDonald) who passed away by wearing his badge number pre game.

I won’t spend much time on the Nets or Islanders this week due to the fact that both teams are at the bottom of the division. The Islanders have lost 4 of the last 6 and have a tough upcoming week, while the Nets are the same old show. It would be a good week for the 2 teams who share the Barclays Center.

The Yankees and Mets are gearing up for Spring Training and Pitchers and Catchers which is right around the corner. Each team has a legitimate chance to make the playoffs in 2017, and have a fair shot at their respective divisions. Hopefully one of the sports team in this town can make a move or do something that is truly worth taking about this week.
