Day 143

Fresh Start_143: The San Diego… Super Chargers?
The Los Angeles Chargers… that just doesn’t sound right. As of yesterday the NFL got word that the Chargers were making the move from San Diego to Los Angeles. The move was made official this morning with the unveiling on the new logo for the Chargers. My opinion on the logo is that it is just a rip on the Los Angeles Dodgers logo with a tail lightning bolt on the end of the “A”. I don’t like the move and think the Chargers organization should have discussed a more affordable plan with the city before just getting up and moving away. This move is almost the exact same reaction I had when I heard of the Las Vegas Golden Knights expansion team in the NHL.

This is a rushed move that didn’t need to happen and will result in the Chargers moving back to San Diego sometime soon. There is no question that the move that the Rams made from St. Louis to Los Angeles last year was exciting, but ultimately bad play on the field, and uncomfortable conditions in the stadium made the fans uneasy about having already one team in the city. If Dan Spanos thinks that moving his franchise to Los Angles is a good idea, well he would be wrong. L.A. already has 1 bad team in the city and doesn’t need another. The Chargers will not even fill a quarter of the seats for home games, and will not draw when they go on the road.

What Spanos has done is alienate his old fan base in San Diego without much warning, and doom his franchise for years to come. I will admit that this almost seems like a dream that the Chargers are moving, but it is not. The other thing that Spanos has done is give the Los Angeles media another bag to punch throughout each week of the year. From a news stand point, the media is already against the team. The city itself didn’t want the team and to have unnecessary work for the columnist to do is just that much more fun. Most likely HBO will ask the Chargers to be on their series “Hard Knocks” when training camp rolls around, and if Dan Spanos is as dumb as I think he is—he’ll say yes.

My question to owners of major sports teams and the leagues they are in is; when will you realize that a move to another market is not the greatest idea in the world. The rushing of moving to a bigger market turns into a train wreck if you look at recent history, and that history will repeat itself in 2017 with the Chargers. The fan base in San Diego most feel betrayed by the team, even with it being an hour and half drive from San Diego to Los Angeles. For the team to just get up and leave like that without any hints or even rumors of it happening has to be shocking to a city where the Chargers were really their only team. The Padres haven’t been good in years and with the departure of the Chargers, there isn’t much for the San Diego sports fan to look forward to anymore.

The good news is the city can lobby for another dumb owner to come along and move his team to their city, just like St. Louis can do. The Raiders would be the next likely candidate to move with the rumors of Las Vegas circling around the press at every news outlet. I feel for the city of San Diego, and look forward to seeing the train wreck that will be the Los Angeles Chargers.
